Default My New Babe

I mostly read on this forum but know a number of you here who also post on the CU board, so apologies for the duplicate post here. I hope you don't mind my sharing a recent pickup that gets me really excited. Plus, there's a bunch of you here who really know pre-war cards. I've learned a lot from many of your posts.

Anyway...finally picked up a Ruth RC: the M101-4 with the Gimbels back. Any of you "Elf" fans, Gimbels was the department store in the movie. But whatever. This has been the hunt that seems like it never would end. Took me a really long time to find one without the common issues: the white print line through Babe's midsection; the black print dots; and worst of all, the terrible L/R centering. I wondered if I would ever find one without those issues, and then...I finally did.

Huge thanks to two fine gentleman. Leon, thanks for your extra set of eyes at National. That's where this all started. Really great getting to know you a little better. And, Matt. Matt had his own research notes having purchased his own, and I really appreciated his thoughts and input. Really helpful when all was said and done.

Freshly reholdered, too. Please excuse the lint on my scanner.

Always glad to add an extra set of eyes. As I had said previously Dan, I think this is the one to own. I couldn't be happier for you. Congratulations on a great and iconic card!! And as a die hard back collector this one has it all going for it too!!

Dan, thanks for the kind words and was happy to help. I have to think that is one of the best examples of the illustrious Ruth RC in the entire hobby. Centered and with no print line-- I know the pain of chasing those attributes all too well. But there's nothing like a happy, rewarding ending to the collectors' hunt. Congratulations on a marvelous example for a world class collection!

And the card looks downright majestic in the black holder. Really pops for the eye.

Very nice card--used to be in a PSA 5 holder I believe. If so, I know the former owner and I'm sorry for his loss, happy for your gain.

Default Ruth

I love the movie "Elf". My wife and I watch it at least twice a year (close to Christmas-time, of course)! I think of that movie every time I see a Gimbels (which is few and far between).

FANTASTIC card and welcome to our forum!

Default Ruth

Can't go wrong picking up an early Ruth....nice card. Seems like anything and everything 1914, 1915, 1916 and 1917 Ruth is in high demand. Too few cards available for those looking to buy.

Nice centering!

Default Ruth

The Ruth "rookies" may be everywhere, but they aren't making anymore of them. Yes, today they may be "available" but they are drawing about a $5,000 to $10,000 priemium as they change hands year to year.....fortunately, we still see some that people bought for "the right price" in the 80s, 90s and more recently....those folks will make good money as they make their cards available...

My prediction is that they (any example of a pre 1917 Ruth) will soon become un-available for less than $50,000.

I am watching the old movie 28 DAYS LATER right now-- and even though it takes place in England, one character calls another (who was holding a baseball bat), "Babe Ruth." Just goes to show how The Babe's name endures. Even in a foreign-set zombie movie, LOL.

Unreal. I dream of hitting the lottery one day to buy these types of cards. Great score and that will def be something you will hold on to for a very long time

Dan,

Great card!!!

Your card has a nicer appearance than the grade shows - even looks a lot nicer than some of the higher graded one's out there.

Best of luck, great investment piece.

Not only is that an exceptional pick-up, but, if I'm not mistaken, one of the four basic food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns, and early Ruth cards.
