1951 topps Red Back Pack Monte Irvin

I lucked out with this unopened pack showing Monte Irvin on the back side. I paid $25.00 for it in the early 1990's in NJ, the person had the original box selling off the packs. I found out later when I checked the pack through the wrapper.

Now that is very cool! If it was me, im not sure if I would keep it sealed or open it up!

Seems like if you can identify Irvin through the wrapper, you should be able to see the other card as well - no?

The other card can't be seen in this pack, but by research Irvin was paired with Dick Kokos as a panel and if they were folded with the players facing outward then yes. This pack has the cards more than likely separated and facing in the same direction only seeing one card

There's no guarantee pairs were packed together for the 1952 Doubles reissue. Some, as you note, have been found separated when Doubles packs are unsealed and examined but not necessarily along with the original (fraternal) twin.

Yes, Doubles came out in 1952, designed to sell the red (and some blue) backs without a confection within.

I have at least one unopend pack with all of my Topps sets and am never tempted to open them becase what I can hope may be inside will always be worth more than what is probably inside. But there are certain packs, like these, where the mystery is gone if you look too closely.

A friend of mine had several boxes of these in the early 1990's. He was selling packs at the old Willow Grove shows. I bought a couple and opened them way back when. Don't have a clue what cards I got. I think he still has a bunch of wrappers from the packs he opened.

There was a large find of these in Philly, I think it was from old wholesaler stock. There were ads selling them in SCD at the time-I bought a pack from the find for $11, sold it some time back. A smattering of Blue Back Doubles packs were also found. SCD blurb from 7/8/83 has some details.
