Default SELL AS IS OR COMPLETE AND THEN SELL??

Posted By: bill latzko

I have decided to sell my partial T202 set which is presently #13 on the registry. While it is only 35% complete, it does have 3 of the Cobb cards, 2 of the JOhnson's and a Mathewson, Speaker and Cy Young. An additional 12 cards have one of the "lesser" HOF'ers. All but two of the 45 cards are PSA 4 or PSA 5--one is a psa 3, one a psa 6.The SMR totals approx $14,800.

My dilemma is this...Since I don't have the funds to complete the set in psa4/5, and have decided to sell this to pay off some bills, should I try and finish this in lower grades (PSA 2/3) to have a complete or near complete set and then sell it or sell it now.?? Would having the near complete/complete set give it a greater ADDITIONAL value than what I would spend to buy the remaining cards in the lesser grades?? Or would that additional (if any) value be so minimal that I should sell as is?? Obviously, if the increased value is not much more than my investment would be, then I'll sell it as is. Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Peace

In your circumstance, I would suggest the following order of priority:
Selling what you have one by one > completing the set and selling > selling as a partial set

Sum of the parts is always greater than the whole, unless you can attach provenance of some sort, perhaps.

And if you need to pay bills, spending more money to complete it is the wrong direction to go anyway, even if you think there may be some added value, ...but I am assuming an urgency to the bill paying that may not be there.

For an easily completed set a nice full set is often more attractive for a seller because you can get rid of the whole thing, whereas if you break it you may be cleaned out of the nice cards and left with a bunch of unsellable ones. For a tough set there are enough people working the set to get some decent bidding going on the breakup.

Bill i would try and complete it anyway i can and then sell it off as a complete set, i feel it is more attractive to sell off as a full set. best of luck whatever you decide to do. peace.

I think that as you describe it you are best off selling it now. Completing the set may take quite a while regardless of the grading requirements and I didn't get the impression that you wanted to wait that long. If you are willing to use eBay you could auction each card separately. With dealers its probably best to just have them buy the whole thing (although you mY ely have to listen to them tell you how crummy some of the cards are .

Lastly, don't rely on the SMR for what they are worth.

I don't think the set will do that well sold as a whole. For some bizarre reason the set isn't that popular -- even though the cards are incredible. I'd break it up and sell them one at a time.

Bill,

From an economic perspective, I agree with most of the others who say don't buy any more and sell what you have as singles.

its only 45 cards....sell individually. Try B/S/T first since its free. Then Ebay as a last resort.

Selling individually is the way to go. Or you can always sell us some of your fantastic T206 cards (don't I wish).

Best Regards,
Scott

I am one of the biggest proponents around with regard to set completion, but I have to agree with Jeff here, sell the cards individually.

I agree with the general sentiment; sell them individually. I would start at the BST as well.
