Default REA current auction site down?

Posted By: Brian

I have been trying to get on the current auction since last night, with no luck. I can get to the REA main page, but can't get into the auction. Is anyone else having problems?

Two possible reasons why the site is down:

1) It cannot handle my prodigious bids; or
2) it is running scared from the esteemed Brockelman & Luckey Auction House.

It says:

Attention: Our auction site is undergoing routine maintenance and is currently unavailable. We will be back online later today. Thank You.

The REA site is down for maintenance. A notice of this is posted on the REA homepage. We should be back up soon!

I would hate to be their site admin; I can't imagine the pressure. The site only needs to be up for 30 days out of 365 and it was down for a whole day today.

My guess - they would extend the auction.

Didn't this (down on the last day) happen to another auction house recently (within the last year or so)?

The REA auction is back up! When we went down, we thought it was a natural hardware issue. All mechanical systems (including cars, computers, etc) have the potential eventually to break down due to natural causes and require repair or replacement. While the hosting company was working on replacing the servers in the middle of the night, we were surprised to learn from the managing hosting service company responsible for our web site (and thousands of others) that this was not a natural occurrence. It was an intentional, malicious, sophisticated, and extremely deliberate criminal attack on our servers with the intention of destroying them. This is a 100% certainty. The emergency security team of the managing hosting company is taking this very seriously. All proper reports are being filed. They are also addressing the problem for us so that this will not happen again. If we understand what we have been told correctly, it may be that the hardware destroying event that we experienced was intended to occur at a slightly later date. Fortunately, this has been addressed now, at this early date. There will be no further statement about this matter at this time because this is a serious criminal issue, and one that is in the process of being investigated and pursued in every possible manner.

As a related aside, REA is always ready to make decisions instantly to deal with any unusual events or situations relating to the auction that might arise in what we think is the most reasonable and intelligent manner possible. If our computer system had been attacked and brought down on the closing day, or the day before, for example, we would have simply moved the closing date of the auction to a few days or a week later. Similarly, if there was a major catastrophic event like 9-11 that occurred on these days, we would also reschedule the final auction closing date. We are always able to respond at a moment’s notice to any event that should occur in what we think is the most reasonable and intelligent manner possible to ensure the integrity and success of the auction.

We put the auction up early this year, so we will actually be up and taking bids for a much longer period of time in 2008 than ever before. We’re sorry that we were down for a day and we appreciate your understanding!

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Robert Lifson

President

Rob,

Thanks for the update.

BTW, if I'm outbid on any lots you have my permission to regard it as an "intentional, malicious, sophisticated, and extremely deliberate criminal attack" on my attempt to win the item and accordingly annul all bids above mine.

Rob, two likely suspects:

B & L Auctions

Sloate Auctions

Keep an eye on Barry; it's always the quiet ones.

Rob,
Sorry the auction site was down but my catalog arrived today and I am always amazed how many more items I see to bid on once I have the catalog in hand. Thanks for another outstanding auction.

How dare you uncover the plot. Very clever of you to know that since Brockelman and Luckey Auctions uses the same hosting company it was sort of a covert double entendre. Who would ever think we would sabotage ourselves? You are one smart cookie......

Leon,

Actually that's very clever of you, to enter into a dummy contract with the hosting company you know transacts with your competitors, secretly implant a virus when you correspond with them, knowing the virus will then infect all their customers. Jeff -- Leon might need a good defense lawyer for this one. Are you available?

Corey, funny you should ask: in fact, I am quite available for Leon and Scott's legal defense to these serious charges. And in lieu of a fee I would simply want my pick of any 10 of their cards. I'm sure they won't have a problem with that.

At your staggering billable rate of $35 an hour I don't think we can do better than a T206 common in vg'ish....but if you bill us for 10 hours we could maybe do 10 of them....

Leon, such a figure is beneath me. I bill my dog Calvin out at more than $35 an hour.

Why don't you just send over a nice rare bread card with Mr. Cobb on the front and we'll call it a day? If it arrives for Saturday delivery I will do all that I can this weekend to prevent any arrest. As for Scott, please tell him to stick something with 3 Fingers on it in the Fed Ex box.
