Default Why doesn't the Kashin R316 set get more love?

I've always wondered why this set is largely ignored by collectors. Conlon photos have always been pretty popular in the hobby and the set features only Conlon images. In my opinion it doesn't have any competitors for the time it was released in terms of how nice it looks. The set features both Ruth and Gehrig.

What gives?

Default 1929 Kashin

I love em. A lot of those 33 Goudey poses were taken directly from the Kashin photos and it's still an affordable Ruth since there was one in every pack.

Still looking for a nice graded Ott, Foxx, Hornsby, Grove, and O'Doul to complete my checklist. So if you know a guy that knows a guy, let me know.

The cards are only marginally larger than modern sets today. They're also not a strip card set or hand cut. It's a set loaded with HOFers. I suppose a lack of a major rookie card holds it back some. Doesn't really explain why the Ruth and Gehrig cards are still so cheap though. 1929 is still a time when Ruth was at his height.

There was a ruth in every pack???? I did not know that? While still relatively affordable in relation to many other ruth issues...they have enjoyed significant growth last year or so.

Not every pack per se, but every box. You could either buy a pack or a box. Putting Ruth in all the boxes is what created the 4 short prints.

Here's a good read on the Kashin set.

https://prewarcards.com/2017/01/21/1...-short-prints/

I can't imagine what one with printing on the back would go for.

thx for that...interesting. you could theoretically buy 4 packs a end up with a complete set!!!! I wonder how much the packs were. I think the lack of clarity of the images also affects the value...in addition to the size...size matters!

Actually the boxes these were sold in were color coded...so that buy buying the 4 diff colored boxes you'd have a set...interesting.

The nice thing they come in the same holder as a Rose postcard, 4-on-1 exhibits, and 71 Topps greatest moments cards so they all stack up pretty nicely.

+1 And a Ruth in every box. How good is that? He was a 4x print!

These are from my previous collection. No doubt some board members own some of them now.

This set is, IMHO, the finest pre-war issue. The photos are almost all from Conlon, who had a gift for capturing the soul of the players. Images so iconic that are used in many subsequent sets, including the derivative cartoons of the Goudey sets.
I wrote an article for Old Cardboard in 2016 that reflected the state of knowledge about the set at that time. As a teaser, I have recently discovered that the traditional nterpretation of the short print story is wrong. It’s not a simple “Ruth in, short prints out” explanation. I’ll write it up and post it later or try to do a follow-up for Old Cardboard.

My guess. . . .

Even though Conlons, pictures don't really pop. Seem washed out looking a lot of the time.

Ssshhhh. Ebay will be fired up with any positive response. I have a few left to go, then we can talk about it.

Default Love this set, too!

I just got a lot of 12 of these back from SGC grading... no major stars but I do have the Waner brothers in there. Grades run from 1-4.5. Considering selling but they don't seem too prevelant on ebay. If anyone is working on this set, let me know- happy to send pics and make a bundle deal!

I agree that the size detracts from their popularity, but the paper stock is the biggest factor as to why they’re not more popular, in my opinion.
They’re not cardboard cards.

Default Because they are Black and White?

Who wants B&W when you can have color? I soaked a group out of an album I picked up years ago and now have them listed on eBay. $2000 off for any net54 deal.

I think another factor in the discussion here is the difficulty of actually obtaining the cards, especially NM or better copies. It has been very frustrating to me, as I am sure it is to many collectors like me who enjoy instant gratification, to wait for many weeks or even months for a key card to come up for sale or auction. It has taken me four years to assemble a complete set in nice condition. Other popular sets all you need is $$$ and you can collect it all in fairly short order. The three very tough short prints (Hadley, Haines and Seibold) deter many from getting a complete set.

Whatever the reasons may be, I still think the Kashin Ruth is one of his most underrated cards, especially when it comes to image. He's got some real stinkers that sell for a ton (like that horrible holding bird e120).
