Turner, this postcard was most likely taken in Los Angeles for Spring Training. Dingman was a photographer noted for taking photos of the PCL LA teams.

Dan:

Thanks for that information! The postmark actually shows that it was sent out from Los Angeles on March of 1910. You are exactly right.

Would you happen to know how often these come up for sale?

Turner, I have seen this one only a few times. It's not a common one that's for sure.

Turner,

I believe McIntyre is first from left (with glove) in first row. Tried to ID some others for you, but couldn't.

Here's another of the Dingman postcards

[linked image]

found this interesting item from Dingman...it's a photo on Silk of the LA PCL team. Looks like Dingman set up in the same place for most of his team photos.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the responses.

Mike: Thanks for the response. I did a bit of homework on Matty McIntyre and he joined the Chicago ball club in 1911. I definitely see where you are coming from, though.

Mark: Thank you for identifying a few members of the team. I've added them to the list. You definitely know your players.

Dan: Thank you for the images. The backgrounds are identical in all three images. Very interesting stuff.

Higher resolution scans forthcoming.

Turner Engle

Edited to add: The first guy to the left, in the second row is holding a catcher's mitt. It must be either Fred Payne or Billy Sullivan?

For sure he is neither Payne nor Sullivan, nor is he Bruno Block who also caught in 1910, but is elsewhere in the photo.

It may very well be Ed Hahn - it's just not clear enough for me to be sure. Why he would be holding a catchers mitt? - I don't know.

They guy left of Shano Collins is Frank Smith.
-------

Dan -- nice Oakland photo - there aren't many good photos of Ed Pinky Swander around that I know of. I have one, yours is the only other one I have seen.

Jim VB and Mark F,

Careful now, as we speak construction of two voo-doo dolls has begun in Illinois. Remember what happened to the Brady Boys.

Mike - actually piling on is immature, I have to learn to resist the prompting, and it is effectively hijacking Turner's nice thread.

Mark: Thanks for identifying Frank Smith. I've added him to the list.

Clint: I appreciate the kind words. It's definitely a great postcard to own.

Working on higher resolution scans at the moment. I will post them in a few minutes.

Thank you,

Turner,

I apologize for hijacking your thread on a terrific postcard. My poor attempt at humor flowed from the Heritage thread on the main board.

Great pick-up!

Jim VB - actually even my last comment was intended to be in good humor - though it probably did not come across that way. I don't think we really hijacked the thread - a few side O/T comments are pretty common. (: (:

Sometimes hijacking a thread will in turn give it more views because people are more apt to click on a thread that is getting a lot of responses.

But to get somewhat back on topic I noticed today when looking through the Legendary Auctions catalog that there is one of these Dingman rppc's available in a lot of PCL items.

lot #769

Of course it's the rppc below

Turner,

One of Frank Smith's relatives has posted on this board in the past. I have had some communication with her. If you have time, I'd bet she would love if you could email her a copy of your PC for her family's enjoyment. Feel free to email me privately and I will give you her email info.

Jodi

Hold on Jodi (: --

Seeing more clearly this morning (due to the higher res scan below) - ID's are:

Gandil - ? - Charley French - ? - Collins - Zeider - Walsh

Ed Hahn - may be Doc White - Billy Purtell - ?

Jim Scott - Bruno Block - ? - ? - Blackburne - Hugh Duffy

I've added a few but deleted Frank Smith -- sorry. -- though it never hurts to ask a relative for an opinion.

If anyone ever runs across a photo of Harry Smith in a White Sox uniform I'd dearly love to see it. He pitched only one game for the White Sox in 1912 going 5 innings, giving up one run and getting the win. It's a real mystery to me why he never played in the majors again after that kind of performance. It wasn't an injury because he played minor league ball in Nebraska after that.

Here he is with the 1910 NSL champs Fremont

Dan,

Kinda like that one Paciorek brother who batted 1.000 in his only MLB game.

And, as to Harry Smith, I didn't know that television's Squiggy played pro ball!

Always looking for better images of short time major leaguers - and yours are a lot better than the Lincoln, Western League photo in the 1915 Spalding Guide.

Your suit and tie photo appears to be the similar to the 1911 Spalding guide Fremont photo.

Dan - since it's the 1915 Guide - it's the 1914 team - so maybe you have seen it. If not, just go to the LoC Spalding Guides site

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/spalding/index.html

It's in the 1915 Guide, image 216. If you have any problem - let me know.

Yep, I have seen it...I saved all the Lincoln photos from the LOC site to my computer. I wish they'd update that site..there are a bunch of missing years from that collection.

Full digitization of the Spalding and Reach Guides is often discussd as a SABR or SABR/LoC project. It will happen eventually - though I don't know when.

Some Reach Guides have recently appeared on Google books - 1902 - 3 - 4, 1905 -6 -7, 1910 - 11.

Mark, do you know what was the first year they started putting team photos into the Spalding guides? A fine upstanding member of the Net 54 (Hi Jeremy!) once sent me a photo from the 1896 guide of the 1895 Lincoln team.

Yes - the 1895 Guide was the first - with 1894 team photos. I have copies of images from then through the 1905 Guide if you have any requests.
