Boston garter advertisement

This was supposedly found in a attic in a true value hardware in Detroit and want your opinion of the authenticity of this boston garter advertising piece. I know its a long shot but it's worth a ask from collectors who know alot more about this than I do.

Horrible fake in my opinion. Comparing to a known real example I don't see any way this is real. The texture looks almost like leather, and the image quality is very poor. Two things we see on fake cards, weird texture, poor image quality.

Edit: Just noticed the White and red stripes on the border. That seems to be a complete fantasy addition. All of the examples I see are just one big Gray rectangle.

Not to sidetrack, but I don’t often get to show off this piece of Boston Garter artwork that I purchased last year. No baseball players represented unfortunately but I just thought it was a cool piece from such a rare issue.

I am in possession of this advertisement. This looks off because it was found next to leaking cans of oil and varnish. The staining has dulled the color and has given the piece a glossy finish. The warehouse this was found in was an old Detroit A&P grocery store that ended up as a TruValue in the 80s. That store closed and the building was used as a warehouse. This was found in an attic area of that warehouse as well as a lot of porcelain signs and early 20th century displays around 2015. A friend of mine bought everything in the building and found this when cleaning it out. He didn't know what it was and threw it in the bottom of a box which caused the creases. He decided to clean out his inventory recently, found it, and asked me to find out info on it. I did my research and unfortunately did not find much besides the Mathewson sold in 2017. I recently had this confirmed as an early 20th century lithograph by a local art gallery. Microscopic images were taken and sent to Heritage Auctions. Joe Orlando invited us to bring it to Chicago for the National Sports Card Convention. So look for this advertisement to show up in Heritage's Display this July in Chicago!

Yea, I wouldn't touch this thing with a hundred foot pole. Again, my opinion.
The border not being a thing on any other legit example (and no evidence of real examples being cut down) is proof enough to me. The way it's being held and almost wavy/flexing is just not how 110 year old cardboard works. If this thing was being soaked by oils for years it would be destroyed, not perfectly varnished like a piece of wood. Getting an opinion from a art gallery is like getting an opinion from a card shop. It's not even close to good enough.

I have never seen a piece of cardstock become bumpy like that. I don't think chemically it's even possible. But I'm not certain. I'd almost bet to the touch its like a piece of vinyl, or leather like I mentioned before.

To prove this is a 110 year old piece and somehow it is the only survivor with a border, and was soaked in oils for decades while surviving that too.

It would need A. Paper samples analyzed by a Lab for the date. Very expensive.

And In my opinion B. (snowman would love this) restored to remove the "oil". To prove the quality is comparable to an original advertisement. Very expensive.

B. is subjective

But both are a waste of money. This is a forgery. If by some miracle it's real I'll eat everything I've said.

I am hoping the Boston Garter box this advertisement was in will show up soon. The box was under the shelf this piece was found on. It's currently at the storage warehouse in Detroit. If I can get the box, I'll put them together and provide a pic.

It has glass in the cabinet door and from what I understand, this piece rested behind the glass. Nothing etched on the glass, but has Boston Garter on the sides in gold. This info is all second hand, so until I see it myself, take it with a grain of salt.

I am a regular on Blowout Forums. I do mostly modern stuff and very little prewar. This fell into my lap and Net54 forum was recommended. Figured you all would have more info on the advertisement.

It will be at Nationals in July. If people are interested in the microscopic pics, I will try to post them on here. I've had some difficulty posting images to this board.
