Default Any coin or currency collectors out there?

I’m starting a coin collection for my grand daughter and am wondering if:

(1) are there any sites about past coin sales? Something along the lines of Vintage Card Prices.com?

(2) any price guides (on line or book) you would recommend

(3) any web sites you would recommend

(4) who is the premier grader for coin?

Thanks for the help

John

For buying coins Vcoins is a good place to find reputable dealers. And a google search will help you find a number of forums similar to Net54 where you can always find members willing to share their expertise.

The PCGS price guide is pretty good combined with ebay. I believe PCGS also tracks auction sales. If you want recommendations for dealers PM me. I would stick to PCGS or NGC for graded coins. Keep in mind that like cards, the eye appeal of coins within the same grade varies tremendously, especially as technical grade sometimes doesn't really look at strength of the strike but is much more concerned with marks. Also keep in mind that perhaps unlike cards, it's very difficult if you don't have professional equipment to get a really good picture of a coin. If 5 people show you the identical gold coin it might look very different.

Not sure what type of collection you are considering. But, when I did a type coin collection it was the funnest time I had putting that together. You end up learning a great deal about coins as you are collecting.

Enjoy the hunt, coin collecting can be very rewarding and fun too.

Cheers,

B.T.
