I typically have no problem with pennants shipped rolled. When shipped flat, some sellers may be inclined to tape them down. Yikes! Still, these are innocent flubs usually made by sellers that don’t know any better, there unfortunately are sellers that do know better and are guilty of much shadier, deliberate conduct. Shipping is usually a lesser concern. But yes it is good to reach out in advance to discuss shipping details. Most understand and are willing to adjust.

They sell "pressing cloths" for just this purpose. They're cheap, last forever and do a great job. I've been using the same one for probably 7 years. The last thing you'd want to do it is put the iron directly on the pennant. But most novice pennant collectors already know this.

New reading material arrived today.

Didn’t see a Blue Jays or Expos section. Is that due to them being Canadian?

I don’t know this for a fact, but I would guess it is because they don’t have any pennants that aren’t crap.

A full size Montreal Royals pennant - I’ve never seen one but surely one exists - would be an easy four figures and probably worthy of the cover!

There are a few Expos pennants that can fetch a price higher than quite a few of those listed in the book. This white (Ad Flag?) one is probably $35-40 and the 1969 ASCO about the same. Cloth version is very tough. The 6 foot version pictured is super rare and really well made. Grommets!

The author does include Oakland A’s (1968-) and Brewers (1970-) but no Padres or Royals.

Come to think of it … I remember seeing somewhere a 3/4 size cloth Expos with the Trench left handed batter graphic … and no MLB trademark. Most certainly a knock-off. But still pretty wild. Anyone have it or a pic? I can’t find it.

To my eye, everything about that ^^^^ is butt ugly.

The disproportionate ball, the excess space between said ball and the lettering, etc. It might fetch a decent price but it’s ugly.

Happy Memorial Day weekend! Dropping a quick post to share some pickups over the last 6 months. I can’t say I have a ton of soccer pennants, but it it was unique enough to snag it.

Last week, someone asked to see better pictures of the three pennants that I picked up a few weeks ago. Here they are.

Once I get done moving, I will iron them and clean them up a bit to be more presentable.

Nice haul Erik. Regarding the soccer pennant...To me, if I haven't seen something before, it's probably a good idea to buy it...regardless of genre. Great get.

Wow.... There are no less than 4 reproduction pennants in the current Heritage Auction. You'd think that a company of Heritage's stature could immediately identify these as modern reproductions. And the bidders appear to be equally clueless. The repros are outperforming the authentic ones!

I’ve heard it argued that to be a reproduction, it must be of the same exact design as an original, and “vintage” can be anything made over 25 years ago. Kinda lame to apply that reasoning to the referenced items, of course. It seems as if they know, as the pennants are said to “celebrate” the existence of the team. Weird way to put it.

Hilarious that the rarest pennant of the bunch is rocking the lowest bid. Savvy pennant collectors out there.

Somebody had to buy this damn thing and that somebody was me. I got the seller to come down 40%. It's ugly but pretty unique. Heavily flocked on some weird substrate. 1930's?

Strong bootleg sale...It's awesome that they put Roman Gabriel on a Cowboys pennant (he appears on Ohio State and Houston Astrodome pennants too) but even more awesome that they left him in his Rams helmet and just added a star to it.

Yes, just another word salad from an “esteemed” auction house.

And that argument is bullish!t if you ask me. Any pennant manufactured after a defunct team is long-gone is a reproduction in my book.

I will never understand people.

I was watching a couple of auctions tonight for some really great vintage pennants. With an hour or two left in the auction people just kept bidding them up and bidding them up. What is the thought process behind that? Do you think you’re scaring other people away by bidding it up $20 or $30? The auction finally gets to a point where the price is absolutely unreasonable and there’s still hours left to go in the auction..and yet people keep bumping it up.

Do people enjoy paying more than they could have?

I’ve heard it said that the winner of any auction is actually the loser. By winning an auction, you have just demonstrated you were willing to pay more than anyone else on the planet. Outside of the hidden gems we sometimes find (usually due to poor descriptions, poor pictures or poorly listed), I think there’s some truth to this. We’re all a bunch of losers!

I realize this is at least partially tongue in cheek but, to the contrary, the winner of the auction is automatically a “winner”. That is, unless he has a specific intention to flip it and he predicts future market value incorrectly. Generally speaking, if a person places a max bid of $X, he personally values the item more than he values having $X. If he wins, he profits. And depending on the second highest bid, he may profit a lot. The difference almost kinda like cash back! Of course I’m not defining profit strictly in terms of cash. I profit every time I go to the store and exchange dollars for goods. Capitalism is awesome!

Default Pickups

Mark mentioned some pennants that were trade away in the past and here is the 46 tigers.

I have also added some pickups in the last year. All St. Louis, and the tough one is the terriers from the federal league.

Awesome stuff Jordan...

That '46 Cardinals World Series pennant is incredible. Never seen another, let alone in that glistening condition. White felt pennants of that vintage are impossible to find that clean. What a beauty!

Default Another repro

Here's another repro in case anyone was bidding. This is a Mitchell and Ness that is an exact copy of the original.

Good catch. And you've gotta love that little chip of tell-tale paper under the stitching on the reverse.

Would love to see images of some of these from our collections, especially ones from teams that don't show up very often.

This is not mine, but on my wish list. I believe it is the Cubs version in this photo.

Interesting that the reigning NL/AL champs (Braves/Indians) pennants are different from all the rest. The Braves and Indians feature their respective team mascots, while all the others feature the same stadium scene.

Great photo, Jason!

Just noticed a second Braves Pennant with the typical stadium scene, but here are links to the Braves/Indians "Champs" pennants...

Wow! How rare is that Bills pennant? Do you think this is because the Bills have been a decent team lately? Or because this happens to be rare/relatively good condition?

The funny thing about this Cubs pennant is that this graphic is the one usually used in the early 40’s and not late 40’s. Weird how they obviously are recently made, but have different graphic designs.

It's pretty rare. One sold at Huggins & Scott for $1300 about 5 or so years ago. Nicer condition than this one, which has some chunks missing out of the top edge and near the tip.

This Bills team is completely unrelated to the current one though I imagine that might not matter much to a die hard Buffalo collector.

I am not sure but I think that St Louis pennant may be a repro. Here is a picture of an original. Colors are different

It always kind of bugged me how they’re called the “Bills”, but their mascot has forever been a simple Buffalo. They are named after Buffalo Bill Cody… right?

Assuming so, this is the only example I can recall seeing with the appropriate mascot. Great looking pennant!

I can’t see anything at all to indicate the framed one is a reproduction. What am I missing?

Default St Louis pennant

On the framed St. Louis pennant there are two shades of blue. ON the original there is only one dark shade of blue throughout. I do not own the original but have a large photo of the original and it definitely has only one shade of blue.
Secondly, notice how well centered St louis is in the framed version and how much lower the same words are in the original.

See posts 6363 and 6364. Mike took a picture of one. I actually bought it in a BIN in April 2022 and the seller never delivered or responded after purchase. Had to be reimbursed by eBay. It appears to be similar to the one framed … here’s a pic from Mike’s post, which came from the eBay listing, along with the clear tube the seller claimed the pennant came in.

Clean Sweep has this 46 pennant currently up for auction along with a very nice 44 Tiger pennant. I own the orange version of the 46 pennant and other than the one I have I have never seen these come up for auction.
