Default Any One Collect Pins?

This is something I just started collecting. I have picked up a few here and there, like a 2009 Yankee Stadium Opening Day Pin among others. I really like picking up pins and can see myself having a large collection within time.

I was wondering if there were other pin collectors here and how do do you store/display your pins? Where can i pick up supplies to keep my pins in good condition?

Also, I would love to see some pin collections, so post up some pics.

Mike

Mike,

Welcome to the pin collecting hobby! Some people refer to us as " pinheads" but I have been called worse. I love pinback buttons, have written two books on them, baseball and boxing, and would be happy to discuss pins with you at any time.

Sincerely,

Paul

Welcome to the forum.
There are definitely some pin collectors on our board. I dabble in everything and here are a few...

Nice pins Rob. Do you think the 1920 pin came with a ribbon or some type of charm?

I'm not really sure. I have another version similar to this one that definitely was issued after the Indians won the 1920 Series, and that one has a very ornate ribbon. If I had to guess, I'd say this one originally had some kind of trinket attached, mainly because it's made by the same company that made the other 1920 pin I have and because it recognizes a championship season.

Default jackie pin and board

Kevin,

I have been chasing the Brooklyn Eagle pin of Jackie forever. I have never seen the pin board with Jackie's picture. I am posting some of my Jackie/Brooklyn pins.

I find the best way to store pins is in the box frames.

Jay

I love pins and badges, in particular vintage enamel badges.
Funnily enough, not so much baseball......
I kind of like putting together groups in themes, so over the last 8-10 years I did vintage motorcylces, then vintage Aussie rules football clubs, vintage international soccer clubs, and a mixed sports group.

Here's a shot of my motorcycles lot.

Don't know if anyone here is into pins from other sports or subjects, but I have quite a few boxing pins available for sale/trade and am looking for some others, like Marciano. I have the following available:

Boxing
Archie Moore: with mini boxing gloves attached
Jake La Motta
Marcel Cerdan
Sugar Ray Robinson
Randy Turpin
Mike Tyson
James Toney v. Roy Jones Jr.
Tami Mauriello
Jersey Joe Walcott (2 diff, one with ribbon]
Ingemar Johansson
Bob Montgomery
Henry Armstrong
Larry Holmes

Others
--1950s Harlem Globetrotters: nice figure of unidentified ballplayer twirling a ball on his left index finger and carrying a suitcase
--I also have several Peter Max designed pins from the movie Paint Your Wagon.
--1970s Montreal Canadians logo

I dare you to wear that on your next plane flight

Generally, I don't love the attachments but the glove w/NY Giants was the only reason I got this duplicate Antonelli.

Rob,
I believe the attachments to pinbacks were done to make them more attractive to kids, especially boys. I remember vendors at ballparks with boards filled with pins with attachments. I admit as a 10 year old boy, a pin with a knife attached was pretty neat. Now of course this would never be allowed. Of course when I went to high school we had a rifle club where the boys brought their firearms to school. I don't know about the rest of you, but part of the reason I collect is to remember the good old days. They are sadly gone forever.

I was going to ask if other teams had these Armour (hot dog) Tab Pins...I did a quick google and found this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Early-1960s-...-/220813464547

Good lord! If that was the SF logo, I'd be on it like a fly on you-now-what!

Anybody got any more???

I found this 1 1/4" 'poke your eye out' style pin over the weekend:

Union imprint in the metal inside the button. I was trying to get some idea of age and value on it but can't seem to find anything. It is not the 3 1/2" version. Anyone help?

Just picked up #4 of the 5 Giants HOF pins...Mize HF38. MK (Mike) has told me there are 40 pins total. He has 37 of the 40 and, like me, is still looking for HF39 Hoyt Wilhelm. Mike has identified 39 of the 40. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHO HF36 MIGHT BE?

Even if Paul Muchinsky's values were high by a factor of two (as they often are), someone got a good deal here. I think the seller could have done better with a better description.

Here's my pin collection. Its small and modern, but I love it and will always look to add to it.

Thanks to ooo-ribay, who has been a source of information to a pin novice like me, I habe placed a few bid on some Yankees pin backs from the 70s and 80s, so fingers crossed I win a couple. Thanks again for the advice and pin pics sir.

Thanks Mike.

I did some research on it to (go me!). Found its a Sports Photo Associates button from 1981. To get it, you would send in 1 dollar and a few 1981 Fleer baseball wrappers and get a pin. There was a checklist, so there were a few other players. I will look at the check list and try to grab all the Yankees on it.

Of course, I am sure you guys already knew that.

Mike

Hey Jonathan,

that’s definitely a cool Spalding pin, apparently advertising bicycles. While the paper insert doesn’t exactly match any of Whitehead & Hoag’s Type I (1896), Type II (1896), or Type III (1896-97) labeling, the pin is featured on the cover of the 1897 Whitehead & Hoag catalog. I’d assume that with the singular patent, your pin dates from earlier, most likely from between the patent date on your example, and the second patent date of April 14, 1896, with both dates appearing on the majority of later inserts.

I hope this information helps, and I apologize for the terrible photos.

I call these "parking lot pins." They were sold, illegally, in the parking lot of Candlestick Park during the Humm Baby years; late 1980s. They were probably a buck apiece, at the time. The bottom left is a new pickup. They are "out there," but not in great numbers. There are a few more I'm looking for.

Default Question for Rob (ooo-ribay)

Rob - in your experience have you found the 1.75 inch version of this Giants crossed bats style pin to be more difficult to find then the smaller 1.25 inch version?

I think it is, Mike. I had never given it much thought, but I have a picture document of my Giants “crossed bat” pins and, at the time I created the doc, I was still missing the 1.75” blue border.

That said, I feel much better about the smaller font “GIANTS” on the right. The other was presented as vintage, but I’m not so sure...
