Default I'd lower the price, but I don't have that kind of cash

Posted By: davidcycleback

As a test to see if anyone was checking out my sales listing on the Sell/Trade forum, I included with my other stuff a Virgil Trucks (2 time All-Star, 1953 20 game winner, threw 2 No Hitters in 1952) signed handwritten personal bank check that was authenticated by Mike Gutierrez. The price was free (with free shipping) to the first person to ask for it. No one responded for 24 hours, so I removed all the other stuff that was for sale and the only listing was the free check. Again, no one asked for the free Trucks check.

Now I know why they use swimsuit models.

You might have wanted to give it some more time. I check the BST maybe once or twice a week.

Jay, it was done as a test, like a hit counter. It doesn't hurt my heart to keep the item.

davidcycleback,

Wow!! If I had known I would have asked but being new to this board I haven't seen everything on here yet and never think to look in the Sell/Trade forum.

Guess there's no use asking for it now?

David, I think your "hit counter" proved the point very well with the new B/S/T thread....nobody checks it very often anymore.

I am sure that I am in the minority, but I thought the old monthly buy/sell/trade threads were much more effective. In a single thread, we can see all the current entries. Anytime there is something new, the thread goes straight to the top.

With the new format, there are five separate categories. I punch in a few each day but for sure I miss those in categories that are lesser priority.

The moderators are doing a great job and I am certainly appreciate this forum. Just my opinion on the buy/sell/trade.

I check the b/s/t portion about twice a day,and if theres nothing new then i dont look.Or if the title doesnt appeal to me then i dont check. It eliminates checking the thread everytime it pops to the top since i check the board about 10 times a day.Yes i have no life and i know that already

I posted 200+ T206s about 3 weeks ago and sold them all in less than 10 days. It is the first time I attempted to sell anything here or via any other internet avenue, but it seemed to work very well.

I like the current format much better than the monthly post where you have to scroll through hundreds of unorganized offerings. This way they are at least separated by genre and one can check as frequently as they like.

Judging by the number of "sold" posts I've seen, I wouldn't say nobody's visiting. I really don't want to revert to the old B/S/T format.

And I hope David won't be too offended if I say that a check signed by Virgil Trucks isn't the best barometer of whether the new index is working, free or not.

....I do think the present format is better and has greater potential than the old monthly post.

I do however wish the "Sell\Trade" listings were in seperate catagories from the "buying\wanted" listings. Too many message titles don't include "Sell", "Trade" or "Wanted" which just adds to user frustration and ineffectiveness in this current process.

Maybe we could just try one "new" index listing for all "Sell\Trade" items and use the present ones for "Buying\Wanted".

But whatever the process, users have to take a little responsibility and use precise clear titles with their posts, clearly stating if the post is a "Buy\Wanted" or "Sell\Trade".

Just my thoughts.....

Actually Bill, figuring no one would notice, I nearly put up my 1896 prison bat for $1. But, taking into consideration that someone might look, I chose the check.

Is there a proper way to control people bumping their listing when nothing has been added to their listing? Soon there could be a "bumping" war. On the other hand, what if somebody has a legitimate listing that is active but languishing near the bottom of the list. Is it proper for them to bump? Granted, the list isn't that long at this time, so the latter is not a problem....unless we have a bunch of people start bumping their listing.

Rob

Put me down as liking the present format too. . .

I don't think we need separate listings for buyers, sellers and traders.

Can we make it a rule that if you're selling the first word in your title be "SALE"; if want cards the first word in the title be "WANTED" and if you're looking to trade the first word be "TRADE"?

ramram, there are a lot of "dead" posts on the list. There needs to be an effcient way to delete those. Many of us post generic wants lists, and they eventually get buried under posts looking for specific items that eventually get located.

I don't have a problem with people bumping a post once a month or so. I kind of think of it like the old monthly thread, bump it once a month so it doesn't get burried under all the dead posts. If a lot of people have a problem with this and Bill stops, that's fine by me too. It just means that instead of bumping, I and others will end up creating new posts once a month or so.

Just thought it funny to note that I did my second free autographed check offer in the B/S/T area (this time Cuban Hall of Famer Pedro Ramos), and again no one asked for it.

As the story goes, I offered in the B/S/T free autographed checks from Virgil Trucks and and Pedro Ramos that were never claimed. While I've decided to quit offering free items in the B/S/T forum as no one claims them (funny that I have to make that proclamation), I have a soft heart and will give the 2 unclaimed checks to the first person who posts here that he or she wants them. It's as simple as that, and this will officially end my grand experiment at trying to giving away free stuff on the B/S/T board.

David, part of the problem might be the desirability of the items. I am sure many people are like me and Lee, we have so much stuff and so little room that we don't really have the need or desire to pick up something for free that doesn't really fit into our collection.

I am sure if it was a t206 common or somethign on that order, it would be snapped up quickly.

Jay, the 2 checks were claimed here in 5 minutes (The proof is in the pudding, as they say).

Honestly, it was hard for me to pick out a freebee that would have at least some widespread appeal, in part because I had to work with what I had to work with. I picked out the 2 items because I thought that a personal bank check hand signed by an old timer might have some appeal. Even many non-autograph collectors know that personal bank checks are ranked amongst the safest items to collect, especially when there were authenticated by Mike Gutierrez.

But, it's a moot discussion anyway.
