Default M116s and W600s out the Wazoo

Posted By: GeorgeHall

I inherited my grandfather's baseball card collection from about 1906-1910. They're all Sporting Life Cards M116. I have about 165.

There are also about 20 of the large W600s - some are sets I believe - large color action cards of Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, Frank Chance, etc....

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to grade, catalog and liquidate such a collection? I'm not in a hurry and I want to get the most out of grandpa's efforts.

Any advice or emails would be greatly appreciated.

The large ones sound to be M110s, which are tough to find, though undervalued. As you are not in a rush, you should not have trouble a good price for the entire lot. Unless you have a gem mint or particularly valuable M116, I don't think there's reason to get them professionaly graded. Selling them indidually on eBay or to individual collectors may be the best way to go. The M116s in small lots might be good too. I gave you an email about his too. Thanks and good luck.

The large ones definitely sound like 1911 M110 Sporting Life cabinets, from your description. They are large format 7 1/2" by 5 5/8" pastel full color pictures in dark grey borders, and the player selection is only six players - Cobb, Wagner, Matty, Lajoie, Chance and Chase. They are extrmemly attractive and highly sought after and always do well when they appear on ebay or in major auction catalogs. Nice find!

There was a Cobby on ebay recently that did not meet reserve. The bidding stopped at 3k. I think they are beautiful and undervalued but I am not sure what collector interest there is ie...demand....regards all....
