Collecting Black Sox

I am thinking of trying to collect a card of each of the Black Sox players along with Collins, Gleason, and Comiskey. I know we have some White/Black Sox fans on the board. Has anyone else put this together? I have Jackson and Gandil done so far. Also, I know of the T207 Buck Weaver but are there more cards of him out there? Please feel free to post any cards you may have of these players.

Weaver is also in the e135, 1911 Zeenut, w514, m101-4/5 and t212 obak and t4 Obak premium.

you can find most of the Black Sox players in the w514 set.

I have some examples on my site that'll give you an idea of what's out there. A number of board members have much nicer sets than i do. Also you can find a "fairly" comprehensive list on 1919blacksox.com, although there are some errors - jackson colgan doesn't exist for example. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

EDITED TO ADD:
McMullin is going to be EXTREMELY difficult. He really has only one major card issue. Risberg has the second fewest... here would be the list in order of difficulty (ie..availability of his cards ... not value).

1. McMullin
2. Risberg
3a. Williams (a smidge more difficult than felsch)
3b. Felsch
5. Weaver
6. Joe
7/8. Gandil & Cicotte (pronounced See-Cot)

Because of the w514's ... they are all fairly obtainable (except McMullin as he is not in that set). That set aside, this is something you can easily do in a handful of months. Just depends on how picky you are and how much you want to spend.

Hey Jim,

Black Sox Fan has nailed it for you. Although Sleepy Burns should be in the bunch if you've expanded to Collins and Comiskey. Burns is in T206 and isn't difficult, seems like he is under the radar, an unknown.


Now if you get a spare McMullin, please think of me, I'll take the one worse for wear off of your hands for you, just to help you out... A collector to search for years and go to his grave without having ever even seen one.

Thanks for all the great information! It seems like McMullin will be the "toughie" to get. I am pretty new to all of this so I appreciate the help. I like the idea of expanding the collection to include all the other parties involved (Attell, Burns, etc.). It should be a fun little group to complete.

Weaver is also in the D310, E100, and E221 set. I've only ever seen one of the E221s of the San Fran team but it is a beautiful card and out does his other Bishop, E100, by a mile even though it is a team card.

I forgot about Attell, and I should not have, I have him on 3 boxing cards, the old T, a small E card, and a Leaf or some such...

As for Maharg, and the whole mess, a must read is Rothstein by David Pietrusza. It takes a while to get to the baseball stuff, but this was one complex man. The bottom line on the fix, Rothstein had 2 separate, indepentent fixes going at the same time... the book explains it so well. A beautiful scam. And what a disaster for baseball, that is still with us today. Today, the signs at the park near the clubhouse and umpires room has language about fraternization based on the gambling concerns... no steroid language, though.

And thanks for the link up there to the McMullin ("en") Zee-Nut. A card to dream about.

Not a card but I have had this for many years, and I think its a great Black Sox item.
It is a centerfold from a Chicago newspaper/magazine. A walk in at a Chicago National sold it to me many years ago.

Beautiful item Richard. I think a lot of baseball fans forget how damaging this scandal was for baseball. You are right - it is still felt to this day. I believe the steroid mess will affect baseball in a similar, lasting way. The difference is the steroid players have the argument that they were doing it to "help" the game. I don't believe this but it has a better ring to it than fixing games.

Thanks for all the great information and pictures. I can't wait to start working on this collection more. One question, is obtaining a McMullin realistic? From what I hear, it sounds like I will have to be extremely lucky to find one.
