Christy Mathewson flip book,, I can see him pitch all the time.
You can also go to YouTube and type in Christy Mathewson in the search box and see actual film footage of Matty.

Here's another favorite. Original Charles Conlon Photo, with image used to later make his Playball Card (guessing 1940?)

Conlon's handwriting on the reverse interestingly notes that Matty's face is showing aging and "crows feet" from his years under the "Burning Sun on the Pitching Slab"...

Default Terrific pieces from everyone !

circa 1912 original vintage TYPE I photograph by the famed photographer Paul Thompson. Obtained directly from the Stanley Weston Family.

Strikingly similar pose to his 1914 Cracker Jack card (NOTE: The Card is NOT mine and most likely never will be).

Thanks Steve on the W555.

I have examined that card over and over (even under magnification) and can't clearly see why it graded VG. It looks minimally NM-MT, but apparently there must be some microscopic wrinkle that I just don't see.

You might say I am a Matty fan.

Snapshots taken at BBHoF.

Cabinet photo taken ca. 1905 by Benjamin Falk. (It is presently being framed. Will post the finished product when it's back from the store).

Turkey Red is ex-GAI5. Couldn't stand their T3 slabs. Looked like they were graded at Radio Shack.

Undergraded, if you're keeping score.

Sig looks good to this land surveyor but has never been assessed by any of them fancy big-city experts.

(Scale of photos all wonky w.r.t. each other. Apologies for that).

Default Kawika... "You might say I'm a Matty fan"

Well David, that's like saying... "You might say the Bambino liked women and booze"

Although I only joined the board just over a month ago, I have followed it for a few years now and I must say that David's post is the single greatest display that I've seen... period. Wow ! Talk about jaw-dropping. Well done David. That is the reason I start these kind of threads. Man oh man.

Alright, I'll follow that with a Matty photo by George Grantham Bain and a companion piece newspaper.

Early in my life, I used to dismiss Matty as just another pretty boy...years later after having read some biographies and listening to other collectors I have developed a better understanding and appreciation of him.

David, that Sporting Life Cabinet is a beaut. Since no one else has shown one (I don't believe)...here is my one and only Matty. I really love this card!!

Default large type Matty BBM premiums

The football stadium at Bucknell University in PA is named The Christy Mathewson stadium. If memory serves me correct, there is a memorial "plaque" of him on a pedestal as you enter the stadium.

...but I have to share this card in every Matty-related thread. (FWIW - I also named my second son Mathewson and we, of course, call him Matty.)

I guess I can't say 'no' to brother Jimmy!

Here's my Matty. Well, the one I painted anywho:

It's based off of Conlon's famous photo, and dates to 1911, when the Christian Gentleman (along with Rube Marquard and some of the speediest speedsters of the era) led his Giants to the World Series.

I normally don't say this, but the photo doesn't do the painting justice. I just got it back from the photographer's, so I'm trying to come to a final version that I'm happy with. Though in the end, I guess having a photo of a work is nothing like having the original in front of you. With that in mind, if any of you are heading to the National in a few weeks, stop by my booth and see the original!! I'd sure as hell love to meet y'all!

Graig

Truly amazing work Graig. It really looks like you can reach out and feel the texture of his jersey and the NY patch on his sleeve. Almost unspeakably beautiful. Seriously.

Graig,

I agree with the others. Phenomenal painting, puts some of the paintings I have done to shame. You have some genuine talent there.

Default Great painting

In addition to the aforementioned NY patch, you really nailed the hair, the fall of the cap and the folds in the fabric of his jersey above the belt. Sensational realism.

He was also a pretty good trapshooter (promotional photo for some type of Gun he was plugging in the 1910's).

Rhys

Also, add my sentiments to those already shared about the painting. You did a wonderful job and the jersey patch is what I first noticed as well. That is a great painting!

This image was a reprint in 1923 initially, and based on the stampings, repurposed again in 1926, 1927 and 1932.

The original auction description indicated it originated from the 1913 season.

However...

On page 139 of A Portrait of Baseball Photography, Yee/Fogel describe it as a Bain image from the 1901/1902 season.

It's clearly a home uniform from the 1901 - 1904 span (the white hat pinpoints 1901-1902).

I'd love to be able to nail down the exact year, though. Not sure how to do that.

There he is, Christy Mathewson, Matty himself, right there in the flesh.

Graig, that is so stunningly good. It is breathtaking in the most literal sense.

So many great Matty images. Thanks to all for sharing. Here's my contribution. The premium from the April 1915 Baseball Magazine 'Park Edition', sold only at ballparks. The premium was designed to be removed from the magazine and then framed.
