Thanks I only collect Criger for this particular set so this one is an upgrade. The other two cards I have never owned previously.

Love having Mathewson and Meyers on one card. They have an interesting/bizarre history together. Per Jack Meyers' SABR page: "After only two years in the majors, Meyers was popular enough for the vaudeville circuit. At Hammerstein’s Victoria Theatre on October 23, 1910, Meyers teamed up with Christy Mathewson in a vaudeville sketch entitled “Curves.” Written by Bulger and produced by actress May Tully, the half-hour sketch featured the battery in a scene set at the Polo Grounds, with Tully playing an ardent spectator. The players, in their home uniforms, demonstrated for Tully and the audience how to throw various pitches, and Meyers explained the workings of the catcher. Tully then returned the favor by convincing Mathewson and Meyers to join her in vaudeville and by teaching them to act, which, according to Variety, “brings out a travesty drama with Meyers as the ‘bad Indian.’ Mathewson is the cowboy who comes to the rescue of the forlorn maiden and overcomes the ‘bad Indian’ by hitting him in the head with a baseball.” Today it sounds as improper as a blackface minstrel show, but at the time Variety called it a “most satisfactory vehicle.” The act toured the vaudeville circuit for several weeks."

Congrats!! That’s a great looking 1 and an excellent choice for biggest ever; but let’s call it biggest “to date” bc if you got that sucker, than more biggies are sure to follow at some point

Nice pick up Pete, congrats

Default C52 Jack Johnson and W555 Ty Cobb

I am fairly new to the pre war cards but I tried to go for quality over quantity. I found both of these on Ebay and were able to pick them up for reasonable prices. The Jack Johnson was listed as a t218 so I got a steal, but I honestly don't know what it's true value is. It is only a pop of 7 between PSA and SGC combined. The W555 is listed incorrectly as a 1907, but I believe it is a 1909 card. However, it is also a super low pop (I think less than 10). It was discovered a few years ago that the w555 should actually be considered a candy card and not a "w" strip card.

Happy collecting!!

Default June’s additions to the rebuilt collection

Tom Weigl released the mislabeled Steinfeldt from his Cubs collection so he could join the rebuilt Howe collection.

Jeff Throm found the Persons recently, the first card of him in the collection.

Thanks to both guys, the rebuilt collection is now at 392.

Finally finished my w554 set. I first asked about this set on the board back in Nov 2010 and have been putting off finishing it for several years. Thanks Brian for the Fonseca to finally finish it. Set consists of 1 B&W, 17 Sepia, 2 Bonemery (Grove & Cochrane). I still wouldn't mind getting an example of each of the other backs at some point.

Received this W575-1 from Val in an old fashioned Rice for Rice swap. Thanks Val! Does anyone have its friend in this same handwriting that lists all the outfield positions and perhaps managers?

Unfortunately, I’ve never been able to find any list he might have kept, so all I can say is I have 392 and I know of (and have images of) an addition 31. So guess the answer would be 423.

I was contacted long ago by three individuals who had a total of seven e-cards that had his stamp. Just a guess that there would be a lot of those still existing, but I’ve stuck just to the T206s. I’d just forgotten about the e-cards. Sorry.

Just added this buy to my T205 HOF set.
Surprisingly hard to find with reasonable eye appeal.

Great accomplishment DJ! Which one is the B/W variation? Is it easy to see that color difference? Another variation you may want to add is the No Caption at Bottom variation although the Foxx may cover that base for you already.

Gary, good question and example of why this isn't an easy answer. The normal thought on these is there are 2 variations. Sepia examples have the name caption and thicker stock, B&W have no name and thinner stock. My Foxx really presents lighter than most other examples I've seen. It is also on noticeably thinner stock than my other cards. While the cut makes it impossible to tell, for those reasons and that it doesn't have a name on top, I believe it is also a no caption variety.

Your Gehrig is interesting as it should be a b&w without the caption though the color looks much closer to the Sepia version, at least to me. Do you know if it is the thinner or thicker stock? Your Gehrig is an example, and not the first I've seen, that makes me wonder if there are actually 4 different permutations of the caption/no caption/sepia/B&W.

Hi DJ, sorry for the late reply. I had to dig up my W554's to check on this. For my Gehrig's, the color for the no caption seems to be the same as the caption version: both are sepia. I also have two Ruth's, caption and no caption, and the no caption does seem to be slightly lighter. All of my W554's are holdered by PSA, so it's really hard to see how thick the cardstock is. To me, all four W554's seem to be the same thickness, but I can could easily be wrong as I'm trying to eyeball these from a weird angle.
