"The Base Ball in Cuba" 1889 by Wenselao Galvez, "The Monarch and his Prowess" by Horacio Roqueta, 1920 from Babe Ruth's visit to Cuba in 1920, do you have them? In González Echevarria's comment he mentions Felix Julio Alfonso, this great friend of mine and author of several very important books on the history of baseball in Cuba, his specialty is the 19th century, two days ago he called me and today he will call me again. because you need some photos of Torriente, Mendez and Dihigo for a new book. Greetings Jason, I await your response.

Rolando

I know of all three books but they are currently missing from my collection. I have only seen pictures of Galvez and “Nine Zeros.” I believe that both are among the rarest sports books in the world. There are probably less then ten copies of each.

Hello, in the photo we see 2 Lloyd cards, from the 2nd series of "Aguilitas" the one on the right has a printing error, many years ago it was mine and I put it in one of my albums above the card next to the Lloyd who is stuck, that is, above Oscar Charleston with the idea of comparing the good one with the one that has a printing error, perhaps one of this thread currently has it. Yes or no?

I do have Baseball in Cuba and America and believe it is one of the most interesting Cuban baseball books. The range of topics in the book is incredible, as it talks about early history, foreign tours and even the integration of Cuban baseball

Jason, I agree with you about how interesting this book is, I have seen very few copies, I have been told that a few years ago it was reprinted, you know something? I'm going to send you a photo of mine from 1908, it's new. Since you have a good collection, I ask you the following from the Cuban baseball magazines of the 1880s, "El Club, El Catcher, La Pelota, El Pelotero en la Habana, El Strike, etc. Do you know or do you have any? Greetings.

I don’t have any newspapers that date to the 1880’s.. My earliest is a copy of El Petit Habana from 1900. I think it is worth noting that the papers issued in Cuba at this time were actually of higher quality then those being published on the US

Noting that this thread has now been viewed almost 5000 times, I think it is important to note The extreme rarity of the cards Rolando has shown us. There are probably ten cards/postcards in this thread that are more scarce then a Honus t206. I think a fair comparison would be a t206. Ty Cobb with a Ty Cobb back. The Punch cards for example probably have under 10 examples each. I think there is a perception that once Cuba opens up there will be a flood of these cards into the US market. Rolando is telling us that this is not true, that these cards are rare in Cuba. He is the only one who has these. It’s not like there are a whole bunch of collectors with similar collections. Monte Irvin doesn’t come to your house if there are 20 other guys who have the same cards. Just to illustrate my point REA has an auction that opened today with 3000 lots, tens of thousands of cards and photos. There are four Cuban cards, one auto and one photo.

Default Scott

Scott, as I told you in the previous message, I like to learn and now I have learned something that I did not know, thank you very much Scott, because I never read what was discussed in that debate in which I had a small intervention, my mission was to confirm that these The cards were authentic and not forgeries, I did not know that before and afterwards there were debates, they never informed me, a few minutes ago I read something, but later I will continue reading, those cards were taken to my house and I wanted to buy them, but those who brought it They wanted to sell them on ebay, I immediately knew that they were original and very rare but 100% authentic, a few days later they returned to my house to tell me that on ebay they had doubts, since they thought they were false, and that the next day at 3 o'clock In the afternoon they were going to make a phone call, and I agreed to go that day, I went and talked to my friend Ryan and told him in my terrible English that they were real, not forgeries, after a few minutes on the computer they connected to net54, I did not I knew what e that site existed, and the questions began, some showed boxing cards etc and I answered everything, as for the 4 cards of Almendares players, it was analyzed and between Ryan and I, it was agreed that they were authentic, that they were printed in 1922, although in two cases they said 1911 and in another 1915, that was my analysis since they were all in my hands and I scanned them, luckily for me due to doubts of the buyers who had doubts, I was able to negotiate 2 of the Almendares and currently They are in my collection, and I consider that they are one of the rarest of the Cuban cards, but I repeat 100% original, and in my catalog they are all and I give a detailed explanation, I thought that when I left the debate and the moderator thanked the debate from Cuba that according to him was good, it was all over and he never talked about that again, but I see that it continued and at times he was tense, I never knew about it and I am glad I was not in that discussion, I have seen that some who They are in this thread they participated in that debate in 2014, if you want some information about my conclusions about those Romeo and Juliet cards, you can ask me. Greetings Scott.

Hello, you send me this photo that appeared in the 2014 thread, of the Romeo and Juliet cards, that photo is from the day that the cards I mentioned earlier were brought to my house, and those cards were in my office and they photographed them and They put them in the thread, your question is that you do not know the following cards: Adolfo Luque's belongs to the rarest collection of all, "Gener Cigars 1925", Martin Dihigo's, is from "Campo Alegre 1946", very rare as well. below the latter are Mallorquinas by Lloyd and Willie Foster 1928, all appear in my catalog, the other photo is from the album "Aguilitas 2da serie Artistica" complete with the 900 letters.

Default Richard

Hello, Richard, you asked me about the Victoria Collections how the sweets were distributed, look at that collection was not of sweets of any kind, many of the Cuban card collections were, some of them of cigarettes, chocolates, candies, cookies etc. When I was a boy I remember that we met a group and bought the Topp cards, and had the collections of the 50s of baseball players, El Zorro, Elvis Plesley, Dave Croket, etc. I completed some of them, but in 1959 it was the last year those cards were sold in Cuba, as for the Cuban cards I had and have some albums, and I remember that the cards came inside a closed paper that their value was 1 or 2 cents, the repeated ones we boys exchanged between us, and many times we played cards, we shuffled them and the one who took the highest number beat the others. Greetings.

Roland,

So are you saying the 1952-53 Victorias were sold in packs like Topps cards and were not inserts in food or tobacco?

Thanks,
Scott

Roland, that photo of those cards is amazing. I see the Willie Foster. I've never previously seen one, except on the uncut sheet. I know that one collector who is a Member of this forum owns one. Is that the same copy in your picture? Or are there two different copies?

Paul

Default Romeo y Julieta 1922

Travis, you sent me the photo of Carlos Royer from the Romeo y Julieta collection, all those cards I had in my hands and I scanned them in 2014 when they appeared, at 4 o'clock on the almendarea you have one, Pedroso's was bought by a good friend mine who lives in Miami, although I do not know if he still has it and I have the other two, those are the 4 known ones are a rarity, years ago I did research and draw my conclusions, which I will explain to you little by little, what if It is true that they are original and were printed in 1922 for the Romeo and Juliet Sports album, which had a boxing section and a baseball section, as I have seen it was prepared for a large number of baseball cards, that collection was prepared for It was released in 1911, maybe it was released or maybe not, because they were waiting for the printing of the album, which for reasons that I do not know, did not come out at that time, Pedroso's card by mistake says 1915, but it is from 1911, since it has the number of games played 191 1, there are interesting things that I investigated in La Compañía Litografica de La Habana, which was the one that printed everything related to the Tobacco Factories, now I took a photo of the album and I put cards from the 1922 series on top, in a while I am going to take other photos and I will continue the explanation, you will have a photo of the scan I did in 2014 with the 4 cards and another with some in the album, if you can when you see this message, let me know. Greetings.

Scott, to the question that they asked me about Victoria, I answered Richard what he wanted to know, but to your question I answer you, all the collections of Cuban cards always say what they are, they were propaganda for factories of caramel cigarettes, chocolates, etc. They always specified it, in the case of Victoria Collections, neither in the postcard nor in the album does it mention what Victoria was, with that name there were cafes, clothing stores, shops etc, I think that the cards came wrapped in closed papers like in other cases, I remember when I was a boy and I bought them in the bodegas and coffee shops for 1 or 2 cents and they gave you the candy. Greetings Scott.

How do the Romeo y Julieta baseball cards relate (if at all) to the boxing cards?

Are they in the same "Album de Sport"?

Paul, you tell me that you know a Foster in the complete sheet and that you know someone who has one, do you ask me if there are 2? As I explained, they sent me that photo of the 2014 forum, so that I could identify some cards, and I replied, that photo was taken when they brought me the Romeo and Juliet cards and I had them on my work table, which I do from time to time, I put the cards on the table so that they receive air, the same I do with the albums to avoid the moths that are the ones that open the holes in the paper, books, etc. My answer to your question is that I do not know how many Fosters exist in the different collections, that is a very rare card, perhaps no more than 4 or 5 are known, Greetings.

Thank you. I am glad to hear that there may be as many as 4 or 5 Foster cards. It gives me hope that I might someday find one for sale.

Default Zulueta "Bicicleta"

Richard, can you send me a picture and ask me who is it? I will tell you that the one that appears in the photo is the great Zulueta known as "Bicycle". He was one of the most important characters in a baseball game. In case you don't know, I will inform you that Zulueta was in charge of collecting the balls that were hit "foul" Richard up to here, what I mentioned is a nice note towards the bicycle, now the reality, Zulueta was a character from the La Tropical stadium He was the one who collected the foul balls, but due to his fatness he ran behind the balls and the public who attended to see the games made fun and laughed when they saw him run, I knew him personally and on one occasion we greeted each other , his specialty was chasing the balls when they hit the net behind the plate, then he waited for them, and all the public attending the game looked at him, if he dropped the ball they would all yell at him and whistle at him, if he caught the ball then they applauded him , every 10 foul, 9 fell, Zulueta was a show, already when he was older he got more fat and walked with a limp, but the whole public was fond of him, now you will see a photo of Zulueta in 1951-52, in that photo that is fractional as it appears in Volume 2 of my catalogs complete, you see Zulueta on the field, the one you see with a white shirt is Martin Dihigo, and Zulueta listens to him very attentively next to him is "Pajaro Cabrera", greetings.

Default Romeo y Julieta 1922

Now I answer your question about the Romeo and Juliet cards and the relationship between baseball and boxing, I consider that their relationship is that they belong to the same series or collection, those that your boxing samples do not belong to the same series, the Romeo factory and Julieta have several different Boxing series, I remember that at the end of the 80s I bought a complete album and I had it for 2 or 3 years and then I left it because I did not collect boxing, but I regret never having photographed it, several tobacco factories have series boxing and baseball, example: Aguilitas in his 3 albums, Susini, Montiel Collections, etc. Now you have a photo that I took of Susini 1915-16, you can see that 3 o'clock in baseball is next to other sports and on the back page of boxing and other sports.
