there are a lot. different colors for different teams....and variations within the teams.
you should pick up lew lipset's enyclopedia of baseball cards volume 1-3.
must read book if you are collecting prewar cards.

There are a total of 10 different teams represented in the set. Each team has two color variations for a total of 20 different color variations. Each color variation has 9 players in it. Twenty times nine gives you a total of 180 in the set plus a few name variations. On top of that there are the rare red infields for two of the teams.

New York A blue infield and green infield
New York N green basepaths and brown basepaths
Boston N white infield and brown infield
Washington brown pennants and green pennants
Pittsburg purple pennants and red pennants
Brooklyn blue infield and green infield
Detroit white infield and brown infield
St Louis N purple pennants and yellow pennants
St Louis A purple basepaths and red basepaths
Cleveland purple pennants and yellow pennants
