Default 1909 Sweet Caporal Case

Friend of mine picked up this Sweet Caporal box. I believe there are 12 packs inside.

I know that you can research the numbers on the Stamp to see what could be inside. But on this box there are no Stamps. Could the packs inside possibly have the stamps on them.

And if there is a Stamp where would I go to find out?

Won't know for sure unless a pack or two get opened, but high chance there is nothing in it.

Understood and know that but if it has the correct Tax Stamp the chances of there being a card is better. Are the Stamps on the pack of Cigarettes themselves?

Dewitt-Clinton tax stamp

Factory 42, 4th. District, N.C. Overprinting is Factory 42, 4th. District, June 12th. 1911

This one most likely did contain a T206 or T205.

Should have your buddy record a video if he's doing a case break, would be interesting to watch. Would love to see a Gem Mint 10 pulled!!! Worst case, he's got a few packs of smokes for the weekend.

Yes he is doing that, he sent me a video of all sides of the box with no stamps, I tried to post it but upload failed.

When he does do a break I will post a link here.

It would be great if he pulled something. I have seen a bunch of videos on pack openings. Not one had a card in it.

Just watched the video and the Jordan card looked like the corners are worn...is it just me? I would expect nice corners especially in that box.

Either T205 or T206.

Possibility of T-42 Birds. Based on ATC documents. The series was distributed in late I910 and early 191I.

I'm not convinced about that box. I would want to know the provenance.

Wow, that is cool. I would wait for Jon C to weigh in (I just emailed him the thread).

These could be worth more closed than open, if that is a consideration.

Hey all - thanks for the kind words. It would be best to see more photos of that carton but from the side, it looks to be later (late teens/twenties).

The YouTube video posted is almost certainly a doctored pack pull.

Joe,

I have a video showing all sides of the carton...if you could email me admin@vintagecardprices.com and I will send you the video.

Thanks

The provenance? Ha - good luck with that. The box is well over 100 years old. There’s no telling how many times it has changed hands over the past century.

I saw the video. It's a Ask Dad carton. 1916. The overprinting was incorrect.

I always get a bit excited when some packs are found and then determining what cards if any, could be found inside based on the Tax Stamp information. I'm a collector of nearly everything, including postage stamps. I've seen correct time period stamps being used on newer packs, to try and pass them off as a 1909-1911 issued time period product. Always be very careful when making purchases, especially if it's not your area of specialty. It's not my specialty area but it can't hurt dropping $20 to $40 for a sealed pack of cards from the 1880's to the very early 1920's when I see one come along, just to mainly be used for display purposes only. I love watching video's but can't seem to help compare every video I see to Geraldo Rivera opening Al Capones personal safe, live on TV back in 1986. It was a very big deal, especially for that time period. And it was also one of the biggest flops in history, with literally nothing of any value found but still entertaining if you don't mind the twist of the blade at the end, literally killing any childhood treasure hunter that may have been left from your past adventures.
