Default May pickups

Not sure how we’ve gotten to 5/8 without this yet, but that would appear to be the case. If I’m wrong, please let me know and Leon can take this down…

If I’m right, I’ll post some pics here in a few. :-)

Pretty rough around the edges, but added the final playing era card of King Carl.

Default May pickups

The vintage highlights of May so far, most of these the result of a few too many trips to a few too many local card shops:

The ‘53 Bowman Feller is a card I’m not sure I had seen before last week. Classic pose.

The ‘63 Berra was my first Berra card as a kid in the 1980’s, and I remember being confused by the “C-Coach” designation. He plays what position now? Not to be outdone on the front confusion, Topps on the back of this one further muddies the waters by listing Berra as “Catcher-OF” - so I’m sure kids in 1963 that were not already familiar with Yogi might not have been sure exactly what he did. For what it is worth, in his final player campaign in pinstripes in ‘63 - Yogi appeared in 35 games as a catcher (only). This card is far from mint, and is suffering from some of the good old Topps print snow in the black background behind Yogi’s head - but I kind of wanted one like this. Anything too minty with this card and I would be too far removed from the copy I had as a kid.

I already had a G-ish ‘58 Reese, but sometimes that high grade, pack fresh stuff just jumps out at you. Such was the case with this PSA 7 last week.

The ‘64 Rose for my money is a much better deal than his ‘63 floating head, take-out-a-second-mortgage card. One, it’s the same picture, only larger, and more detailed and more colorful. Two - that rookie cup!

I will admit I don’t exactly love the ‘64 Yogi, but got this one in trade at LCS #1 last week on some modern I regretted buying. It’s in pretty nice shape at a 5.5.

The Hunter RC and the ‘64 Mathews standup were also LCS #1 pickups a few weeks ago. That’s my first ever ‘64 Standup…

Picked up a mid-grade complete set of 1977 Topps baseball. It was the first set I remember as a child. I’ve been on a “buy back the cards I had as a kid” kick lately. Getting this one has been a blast so far. I’m still in the process of putting it in a binder.

I like the 1964 Topps set and I think the Cubs cards look great with the color match.

Ha! I've been doing the same lately...buying back a bunch of my favorites from when I was a kid just starting collecting. Luckily I kept a list of all my cards back then and I still have it so that makes it easier.

Great looking 77 set!

Great project, I have done some of this as well. There was nothing like the vintage cards we had as kids. A time when condition didn't really matter and we just appreciated the heroes of days gone by...

Ahhh....the first cards that I bought by opening packs. Always loved opening a pack and seeing that blue or red All-Star banner on a card - you knew you had a keeper.

Some great pick ups! Love the 77 set...my first cards were 79, so the 77s always seemed OLD to me...

Slowly picking up cards here and there to my SGC 7 or higher 64 Topps Giant set. I'm late to the party on this set so it's costing me...but fun...picked up Hank for what I thought was a great deal on auction...

Another month and another iconic card for me. Happy to have this be my first mantle and last really big piece for my 56 set.

Thank you! I like the saturated orange color of the background.

I think it is one of those cards that got dinged because it has some faint wrinkles that are really hard to see. This one has a wrinkle by his first name on the lower left (if the light hits it right).

Finished my mini-run of Steve Carlton base cards, 1965 - 1980. My vintage cutoff line is the end of the Toops monopoly, so I’ll probably get league leader cards and such from the ‘70s to start filling out the player collection.

Always loved this 56 Spahn...the view of the stadium really makes this card a piece of art. Very well done...classic 56. Great pic up...

Having recently built my third set of 1973’s (the first year I started collecting), I am still on the hunt. Just found this lot on Facebook last week. Check out the Kaline boo boo variation!
