Default Eddie Plank

The buyer made a great find.......I think. Not sure.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Gettysburg-...p2047675.l2557

He sure made out nicely on the 1st one, now has a second one up.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1900-Baseba...p2047675.l2557

But I wonder if the Planks, were from extended members possibly of the Plank family. Was maybe back then not unusual for families to live close to together even all in the same town?

None to me look like "S" is the second initial, but please let me know if real. One of THEE best finds ever if so. But to me all 3 look different. Maybe 1 is an Eddie Plank the other is Mrs Plank, or a brother or sister, or parent?

Thoughts?

imo I dont think these are signed by Ed. His E.S. Plank sig has a very clear S. This second initial is not even close to an S. It is very possible this is a relative plus it was somewhat common for people to sign bank notes first and middle initial (as you can see from the other notes in the lot). By Coincidence this just happens to be the way Ed signed his name most of the time.

I don't believe it is real also. While I agree with the seller that the PSA check is bad, he obviously sent these for at least a quick opinion and it failed. Otherwise, these would be encapsulated and selling for 10 times the amount the last one sold for. Even if it were real for arguments sake, as I have learned the hard way, if a TPA won't pass it-it has no real value.

Additionally, as other has said-and as the other 1900 check proves-his "S" is very distinctive and that middle initial looks nothing like an "S" to me, I would go with an H.

Here is my 1913 signed banquet menu for comparison purposes:

oh yah, dang......and doesn't help that looks like just about every member of that family's name started with an "E".

"Ella Catharine Plank Plank"... Hmm... Hope she didn't have any three-eyed children.

Well still was a great near find nonetheless...like finding a good clue in a treasure hunt...I cant tell you how many different searches I do in hopes of finding some random signed document by tough signers.

Here is Emory Homer Plank's marriage license. I dont know the ins and outs of filling out the paperwork back then but assuming one of these is his signature (but none of them might be)

Looks like another seller got in the action as well:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Gettysburg-...p2047675.l2557

Although he (Maryland) only made $250 on his, not $800 like the first seller (Iowa).

None of those are Ed Plank, the baseball HOFer's signature, IMO. Likely a family relative, but not his.
None of the ones I have seen so far, have a middle initial that is anywhere close to looking like the letter "S." One looks like and "H" and the other "N"

That is because he was at least honest that a TPA could not say it was real. It only had one bid. Basically, someone took a gamble on it for $250. The other listing language implied the seller believed they were real and not any TPA opinion. Kind of dumb buyer for spending that much money on a sig that look nothing like it. I wish there was an emoji for "shaking head in disbelief"

Is it possible that these docs were filled out by a bank clerk and not by the depositor? Many of these to me look like there were done in the same hand. Look at the "J"s in the receipts in the upper left of the batch photo. Looks like same hand.

Actually this 3rd one that he has up now is the exact same one as the first one.

So looks like the first buyer backed out.

Wise move at $850 plus for a Elmo Hexator Plank signature.....or a bank tellers signature of Mr E H Plank.

I saw these on EBAY and that’s what made me nervous, or if the seller was selling a copy because even the dollar amounts on the deposit slip are the same.

I admit that I was the first bid on the second auction and was willing to take a flier on it for $50 but anything beyond that meh.

Keep in mind too that these were supposedly signed before he was on the Athletic’s and there’s a chance (probably a small one) that his signature could have changed over time.
