My first pickup thread startification. Sweet.

I could have done without the crayon scribbles on the back, but you Obakers out there know what a pain it is to find the "Just Right" back.

That back is the toughest in the set (I believe). It was the last one I picked up to complete it. Nice card.

Yep Leon, it is the toughest. And I learned that last year by running an Obak search on this site. The cumulative knowledge of this community is an incredible resource.

LOL ... I don't want to be the one to break the bad news, Matt, but ...

Edited to add a word of advice to Matt about considering crossing that over to GAI.

Some pick ups over the past few months - the pace stays slow but fairly steady:

Miss Alta Weiss trade card. She pitched for men's semi-pro teams around 1907. From Rhys and his awesome new site. Wow.

Another from Rhys. I don't know what it is but it's cool as hell. It's a litho of Charlie Bennett of the 19C Detroit team. Calling Joe Gonsowski. Calling Joe Maple. Calling Joe Jones. Any of you guys ever see anything like this or know what it is?

1906 Grand Rapids Minor League team from the Central League. I didn't even know GR had a team during that era, and was thrilled to pick this up. Mr. Dan B says that there may be up to five guys here that eventually went on to play in the majors, including Ed Summers, but I haven't had time to go back and match faces.

Withee Women's team from around 1910. The banner on one player's lap says Withee. Postally unused, but post-1907 as it has the split back.

I think I already posted this one but damn - some things you can't post too many times!

JoAnn- That Alta Weiss card is fantastic. Ken Burns had a really nice piece on her in his documentary "Baseball."

Thanks Bob. I am really glad to have it. Most female players from that era are anonymous, but Maud Nelson, Alta Weiss and Myrtle Rowe are exceptions. They were known by name. I have two of the three so far.

I saw the Baseball piece - one of my favorite parts! OK. Along with the part about the Knickerbockers. And Wagner. And Cobb. And Ruth.

There was a nice article about Alta Weiss in the last issue of 108 magazine (RIP). I'll scan the article and send it to you Joann.

Great card btw and I think I've seen it before.

I think I should move to Nebraska. They have really good antique shows there.

OK Dan - here's a question. When you go to these antique and paper ephemera shows and malls, how much time to you spend poking around dealer tables before you run across things like that?

I have been to this show so many times that it seems like I never see anything different. This group came from one of my favorite dealers and I had to run to find the nearest ATM which was about a mile away -I got back to the show with about 5 minutes before closing time...I walked around the whole show before visiting this guy and spent all my money elsewhere.

Even cooler is that he told me he found an 1880-90s Sterling, NE baseball cabinet photo and he's going to email me a pic of it in the next day or so.

Thanks guys.

Dan -

His name is Matthew (I tried for Mathew, but my wife is a traditionalist and wanted two t's.) But we are calling him Matty like Christy. A little give and take and everyone is happy.

Leach Cross "The Fighting Dentist"

won 89 (KO 21) + lost 38 (KO 4) + drawn 17 = 144

1909-06-26 Fighting Dick Hyland 11-8-2
Coffroth's Arena, Colma, California, United States L KO 41 45
Cross was floored 15 times, and after the 25th round fought only on the defensive. In the 40th round, Cross took the count on 3 occasions, the bell saving him from defeat. In the 41st, a punch drove Cross through the ropes and into the laps of the newspaper men, who pushed him back into the ring, he was flattened again. The next blow landed to the pit of the stomach and folded Cross up like a leaf, and he lay unconscious while he was counted out. His seconds carried his prostrate form to the dressing room.

Thanks for the indulgence ...... fun // fun
