Decisions decisions...1909 Cabanas?
Posted By: leon
As I branch out into the international cards for my type set I picked these up. I am leaning towards keeping the Marsans as he's a bigger name (which I try to go for) and would kind of look neat beside the Texas Tommy I have of him. Two of our respected Cuban card collectors have said I should keep the Almeida as he was a very good player and is in better condition. So if these were yours which one would you keep, and why? regards |

Both, because they are rare and desirable! (does that help?) |

I've never seen that set. Nice. Seeing as both early Cubanos played in the bigs, I'd keep 'em both. If I was pressed to sell one, I'd keep the tougher one (if there is a difference). |

I agree. For a type I'd keep the Almeida. Presents much nicer and you already have a card of Marsans. |

I would keep Almeida as the card presents better than Marsans. |

Sell one and then for the same $$ pick up a Habana Player (red), and a Detroit Player (gray). |

in general over condition and player content.... I would opt for the Almeida. It was a decision I faced in general and specific terms often when I was typing 19th century non-sports - albeit a more expansive undertaking. As they were "types" - while I tried to get the most recognizable names or most interesting subjects - I wanted each card to convey the subleties and uniqueness of each issue in the best light - like painting a picture that could be understood on more than one level. That's part of the fun and one of the responsibilities of putting together a type collection. You define the parameters..... |

Leon, I would go with the Almeida. He is pictured on far fewer items than Marsans. Also, while Marsans might have the better name recognition (to us in the US at least)I personally feel Almeida was a more colorful character. If you get a chance to read up on Almeida, he was a pretty interesting (and demanding) fellow. |

I like the Almeida better because the crease is real distracting in the Marsans. For this reason, you should keep the Marsans and sell me the Almeida. |
