I'm not up to speed on the pre-1900 stuff....what exactly are these? I know I found the same exact poses on the N172's...but geez...didn't expect this price.... |

N173s with the ads cut off. Did this fella not understand what a reserve was? |

They are n173s with the Ad cut off. The seller originally listed them with a minimum bid of 7K if I recall correctly and they went unsold. I was the 3rd underbidder at just over 1K since I like trimmed cards. That said, I was also pretty confident I wouldn't meet the reserve. Either the buyer knows something I don't (easily likely) or they made a mistake. I IDed all of the guys except the one in the suit, and unless he was Bid McPhee I don't think there was a huge premium for the players. (Remember I could easily be wrong) Their previous purchases have mainly been modern stuff. If the cards were complete it would have been a fine price. |

667 apiece for N173s with the ads cut off...who knows? With the way things are going and the scarcity of N173s it could be a good price. People are paying $1700 for torn in half, skinned, and trimmed Bid McPhee cards. You can't be picky when it comes to items that are difficult to obtain in any condition. |

His listing had the size in the Q&A portion. I e-mailed him and asked for his reserve, saying I was having trouble valuing cards that had been trimmed along the bottom. I even told him that the ad was gone and what the catalogued dimensions were for these. I also told him that they could have been trimmed 100 years ago--that it was not uncommon. He claimed he was certain these were not trimmed, which piqued my interest into thinking maybe these are some sort of proofs (an overused term, I know, and one on which I claim no expertise--sorry). Didn't pique my interest $6K worth though. |

These cards are trimmed cabinets. If I am not mistaken they were part of a lot which appeared in a Lelands auction in May. |

If they did indeed appear in Lelands this past May then the seller is full of you know what. |

They are 6 1/2" normally. If you look at his numbers he said the picture was 6" long and the card was 6" long. Since there is a top and bottom border that can't be true. In the previous auction I also informed him that they had been trimmed which he said was impossible. Whatever. |

It's all in the scans. Why else would he cut off the bottom of each scan so you couldn't see the bottom corners and wear patterns. |

Sorry--my mistake. In Lelands May auction they had some Cinc. Old Judge cabinet proofs. These look like genuine trimmed N173s. |

While I do think it is pretty high for these, some people will probably pay a premium to pick up a large group. |

I didn't realize that "Long & Short" made an appearance in N173. Cool card. |

or trimmed 'proofs'. My bet would be the 'proofs' on a studio mount. |

I'm inclined to agree with Tom B. I wouldn't concede that these cabinets ever wore an Old Judge ad. While we used to turn up 2-3 "new" N173s year when I was compiling the SCBC, a group this size in which most of the poses, if not the players, had gone unchecklisted for 125 years seems like too much of a good thing. I'd be more inclined to think these were originally mounted on a local studio's cabinets. |

The buyer with that ebay i.d. has been soliciting me to consign items in the Mile High auction so they might end up there. |
