Jimmy Dykes from a set (W574) that is both odd and interesting. I have included an extra large back scan because...I don't know what I am doing around a scanner.

Default 1924-25 Aguilitas Eusebio Gonzalez

Papo Gonzalez

Eusebio M. "Papo" Gonzalez. Papo appeared in three games with the 1918 AL pennant-winning Boston Red Sox, but did not appear in the World Series. He has the distinction of being the first Cuban player to play for the Boston Red Sox.

Gonzalez has a career .400 bating average (2-for-5) with a triple and 2 runs scored. The team's lack of interest in keeping a rookie with a .400 batting average has led to questions regarding whether Papo's complexion was too dark for the Boston of the time.

Default 1926-27 Aguilitas Adolpho Luque

Dolf Luque

Adolpho D. "Dolf" Luque. Pitcher for four MLB teams betwen 1914-1935. 194 wins and 29 saves in 20 MLB seasons. 2-time World Series champion -- 1919 (Cincinnati) and 1933 (New York Giants). MLB wins leader in 1923. 2-time MLB ERA leader. Member of the Cincinnati Reda Hall of Fame. Member of the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame and one of Cuban baseball's most famous figures.

Luque was known to have a temper. While with the*Brooklyn Dodgers, a heckler in the stands hollered "Lucky Luque! Lucky Luque!" repeatedly. Luque went over to the dugout and told manager*Wilbert Robinson, "I tell you, Robbie, if this guy don't shut up, I'm gonna shut him up." "Aw, come on, Dolf", said the manager. "He paid his way in—let him boo." Just then the heckler spotted the rotund Robinson and yelled, "Hey, fat belly!" Robinson said, "OK, Dolf—go ahead and clobber the jerk." Luque obliged his manager's request.

I like that the card manufacturer decided to include his marital status in the writeup.

The card has really interesting late at night flash photography, and the 'from above' perspective is pretty unique too!

Thank you. I am pretty sure this is the same card I bought raw from Lew Lipset at a Willow Grove show 30+ years ago (along with a similarly nice looking T227 Baker). I think it was $200 a card. Years later I had it graded and then sold it when I was raising money to buy an apartment. I bought it back a few years ago (it was reholdered at some point in between, I don't think they had the PSA stickers when I had it graded).

Anyway, here's a another birthday boy, Mickey Doolan/Doolin.

And here is today's birthday boy: Ed./Edd Rousch/Roush. My scanner does not work well with the thicker SGC cases, so I am cheating and using the REA scans from their last auction.

Michael, I won this card and a like-graded Baker in a Barry Sloate auction. Also, had, about the same time, a PSA 6 Cobb purchased from SportsCards Plus. I believe it is still the highest graded example. All were auctioned off by Mastro around 2005. Sure wish I had them now.

That makes total sense. I am friends with Barry and used to consign cards to him.

Edited to add that John's comment and my reply make more sense in the context of my later post about the card:

Default 1927 E126 American Caramel Series of 60 Tristam Speaker

The Gray Eagle

Tristam E. "Tris" Speaker. "The Gray Eagle". Center fielder with the Washington Senators in 1926. 3,514 hits and 117 home runs in 22 MLB seasons. Career OBP of .428. 3-time World Series champion -- 1912 and 1915 (Boston) and 1920 (Cleveland). 1912 AL MVP. 1916 AL batting champion. 1912 AL home run leader. 1923 AL RBI leader. Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame. Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame. 1937 Inductee to the MLB Hall of Fame.

Speaker had already had a Hall of Fame career playing for Boston and Cleveland by the end of the 1926 season. But baseball was still skittish regarding game-fixing in the wake of the Black Sox scandal, and when a disgruntled Dutch Leonard accused Speaker and Cobb of fixing a 1919 game, Ban Johnson quickly convinced both men to resign in order to protect baseball's image. Though Leonard's accusations were eventually abandoned by Leonard and Speaker was cleared by Landis, he didn't return to Cleveland. Instead he signed with Washington, hit .327 in the 1927 season, and left us this card featuring The Gray Eagle in a Washington uniform.

Great song and great prompt to post some players. I will add another Mungo with a card I won in the last REA auction. And I will use their image because it is much nicer than any scan I could do.

Thanks, I only show the backs if they have something to show. Otherwise, consider they are either normal or with paper loss.

Hugh "Losing Pitcher" Mulcahy has one of the SPs in the Exhibit Salutations run. That one and Johnny Rizzo were the bane of my existence, collecting-wise, for quite some time. Both sold off years ago, but I do have a few cards from the Salutations run, so here's King Carl:

Always willing to share an W9316 ugly or two, these being Veach with no squiggly lines, and Veach with the squiggles.

Brian (The question of the day to chew upon...if you were forced to own only one W9316 Veach card, which version would it be?)

I am not much of a non-sports guy, but perhaps it is possible that this set could also non-sports subjects too, like several other strip sets of this era.

Brian (please pummel me if I am off-base)
