Default What's Your Hobby New Year's Resolution?

Posted By: Bruce Dorskind

Recently, there have been a plethora of a number of threads about
recent pick ups and/or a review of 2008.

Let's take a moment to look ahead 2009 and ask each Board Member

What cards do you plan to obtain?

Do you plan to attend the National or visit Cooperstown?

What research do you plan to undertake?

Our resolutions are listed below. Now it is your turn at bat

Bruce,

Nice idea for a post, but while I admire your numerous
ideas for 2009, I for one am taking on one project at
a time! Last December I began work on a book about
the Philadelphia Caramel Company. It's been a long
and arduous task, which is coming close to a conclusion.
At this point I don't want to take on any more projects
until I get this one done. Afterwhich, I think I'll
slowly get back into enjoying the hobby once again!

I plan to keep doing what I most enjoy:

Track down living MLB alumni who have gone "MIA", and locate the whereabouts and family of deceased major leaguers through research. It sometimes gets exhausting, but I have never known a more pleasant feeling than finding the final piece of the puzzle that closes a case!

Finishing my HOF set: Oscar Charleston, Andy Cooper, Cristobal Torriente, Harry Wright, and George Wright. And if I make millions selling houses: Josh Gibson and Biz Mackey. Have a great holiday, everyone!

1. Save the life of our fellow board member who owns the G&B Spaulding and a W600 Burkett.

2. Accept those two cards as a token of his gratitude.

Keep all of my uncataloged issues and cards uncataloged. Hopefully complete my Sea Raiders Master set. I will be setting up at the Cleveland National.

I would say that my only Resolution is to get to the National this year, which will be my first one.

In 2009 we resolve not to have computer problems in the final minutes of a major auction, which prevent us from "bidding."

On back-to-back nights.

My low grade (and budget) T206 set is currently at 512. I think I can realistically add three or four more cards without breaking the bank. I am not jealous of other board members, nor do I envy their collections (well, maybe I do a little), but I do like it when they upgrade their collections. The BST part of this board has been a a great resource over the past year!

Research-wise, I will continue working on my Amos Rusie project.

Non-vintage projects:
1) Nate Colbert odd ball cards as they become available.
2) Continue work on Top 30 ABA Player Card/Game Used/Autographs

Scott

I will try to do my best to not bash PSA (too often).

I will attempt to only make purchases of cards that I feel I really need (yeah right).

I'd like to actually win a N172 Bid McPhee after coming in second on all three that I bid on last year.

Jodi,

I have not seen a list in some time of missing major leaguers. I remember Ed Rakow, Phil Ortega and Horacio Pina. Any current list you could share.

Dan, I just sold a Fan Craze Crawford on ebay a few months ago.

My major goal for 2009 will be to get to 100 different T206's. I currently have 56, so it is reachable. I want to add the Cobb Bat Off in a PSA 3 before I get to 100, which will give me 3 of the 4 Cobbs in the set. I also want to finish my raw 1933 Goudey Cubs team set, which I just started a few weeks ago. I have 14 more of those to get. Anything after this depends on my budget and finances.

Goals for 2009...

#1--Get closer to finishing the E254 set - down to an even 55 for the set right now. Not all are tough ones either so I should be able to make a little headway this year. Also, add as many E270 Tin Tops as I can (and to a lesser extent the E270 Red Borders)

#2--Add to my ever growing Zeenut and E121-like collections. Would like to pick up a few more pre-1924 Zeenut HOFers/Stars. If Fred is sick of his Claxton, I could probably find a new home for it.

#3--Complete my Roy Castleton collection-need only the D311 PCBiscuit and the Western Playground (& an Obak Cabinet if one is ever discovered). The D311 is doable while the Western Playground probably isn't.

-Rhett

Another good thread.

My goals:

1) Move closer to finishing out my 1938 Goudey set in higher (80 and up) grades. I'm down to 8 cards, none of them keys.

2) Add another 3-4 Henry Johnson Confectioners cards and research the company.

3) Sell everything that doesn't fit in with the core of my collection.

4) Figure out what the core of my collection is.

-Al

- pick-up a few more game-used bats (PSA/DNA 8 or higher).

- pick-up a few cards (maybe Mantle, Ruth, Gehrig?)

- i certainly plan on going to the nat'l again...was a lot of fun, and i got some cool pick-ups as well (Jeff- you have to try and make it there!)

Find an N172 Charles Kelly
Finish my '71 Topps set
Narrow down my collection of "unwanteds" so that I can afford more T206's

Not much...but hopefully achievable.

Merry Christmas!

In 2009, I would like to share with other collectors and potential collectors the knowledge that I have gained over the past five years of collecting Baseball Hall of Fame Rookie Cards. Putting together a useful resource tool will be my primary objective.

What cards do you plan to obtain?

NONE in particular but hope to add to both my type set and my few sets I am collecting.

Do you plan to attend the National or visit Cooperstown?

The National and hope to have another Net54 Dinner party.....we shall see....

What research do you plan to undertake?

Probably will research more stuff that not too many collectors care about....mainly ancillary items of our cards.

I might look at focusing a little more but it's very difficult. Every time I see a card that is really neat I seem to want it. I might try downsizing the collection a little as I tried to this year....but what went out of one part went back into another part.....So my downsizing was only partially successful....

Bruce:

I know of a good opportunity in which you may be able to obtain a high-grade copy of the Sol White Book (it is not mine, and I do not stand to profit).

Just a "good deed" this Christmas... I have a friend that was considering selling or consigning. Please just email me privately if you are interested.

Thanks,
Mark

stay alot more focused, not start any new sub-collections until my current ones are finished,

spend ALOT less money (this is actually a must) sad.gif

organize my collection better, including storage, documentation, website updates, and improve my research into my cousins' careers.

Although I expect to pick a few other items, my main focus will be on T206. My new years resolution is to make at LEAST one T206 purchase a month.. That is slow going but I expect to make more than one a month, it just depends on funds..

I am always in the hunt for Jewish players, especially the elusive n172's. I have Nash, but need Roseman and Stearns. I plan to keep chipping away at my modest t205 set (currently half done, with all HOFers accounted for). And I like to add to my "funny card" subset - i.e., players photographed with their eyes closed or tongue out, etc.

I'll try to maintain a balance between focus and inspiration. I like to have a sense of purpose, and I like a bit of spontaneity.

I'd like to attend National, but my tennis tournaments conflict. Someday, it will work out. Until then, I'll make do with the BST, the WSSCA Show, and Ebay.

Happy Holidays, everyone. And Happy collecting, too.
