I'm not sure if any of you noticed that the HOF has released the preliminary list of nominees for election by the veterans committee in 2007. Here it is.

http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/news/2006/060403.htm

They had to dig pretty deep to come up with 200 players plus 60 executives / managers / umpires. John Hiller just can't be a Hall of Famer. But I think the biggest surprise on the list has to be George W. Bush. I absolutely don't want to start a political debate. This is about his baseball credentials, not his political credentials. He did sign Nolan Ryan to the Rangers, but other than that I think his most famous baseball accomplishment was trading Sammy Sosa.

No Bobby Mathews? Who made up this list! Poor Bobby shouldve stuck around for those 3 wins that didnt mean anything to him back then, besides a round number, and he wouldve been in the hall at least 35 years ago

That was my first thought (regarding Mathews)... I guess Dave Orr was left off the list because he only had 8 years... now what about Lawerence J. Corcoran, the best 8 year pitcher out there... who the heck is that person that sponsors his page in the BaseballReference.com web site?

If Dubbya "I had no idea Conseco and my other players were taking steroids" gets in, it will be a cruel joke.

If you're going to get into the Hall as an owner, your team has to be better than the Rangers.

Good to see some Phillies on the list (Allen, Buffington, Magee, Luz, Cy Williams, Ennis, McGraw, Bowa, Cravath, Simmons, Camilli, etc.)...

Personally, I would vote for very few of these guys.

My votes would go to the following:

Dom Dimaggio-- I know, the numbers thing but he was very good.
Gil Hodges- Way overdue.
Elston Howard- great team leader, great catcher, would have been a star on any other team.
Sherry Magee-- similar #'s to Ashburn and a great fielder too!
Thurman Munson-- would have been a HOFer had he not passed too soon.
Lefty O'Doul-- avg. was great.
Van Haltren-- good numbers, good player
Smokey Joe Wood-- same as above

Just my votes...a few others are very close on my list incl. Cravath, Cy Williams, and Trosky.

Who would you vote for?

Joshua

2368 games played
2743 hits
1189 runs
1326 rbi's
7 time allstar
played for the 1971 world series champion pittsburgh pirates

My HOF vote is for Ed Reulbach.

Just compare his numbers to other HOF pitchers.

Adam,

Could you please finish your thought. Is there a particular player that you think should be in the HOF?

Yes, I too wish Adam wouldnt leave such cryptic messages. As if we have the time to figure out what he is trying to say. The nerve!

Elect Jim Kaat - I've been holding his rookie card for headin' on 50 years now, all in the hopes of some day getting twenty bucks for it, or so. Any longer and I will use it as a bulls eye. $20. just don't buy much nowadays. And I never liked those '60 rookies ... all in orange. McCovey was another, but he was better than Kaat. I remember his first game, what a start!

Not that it matters since no one from the 19th Centruy is going to get in anyway, but when pitchers like Bobby Mathews, Jim McCormick and Gus Weyhing don't even get acknowledged ahead of pitchers like Stu Miller, Burt Hooton and Curt Simmons, there's something inherently wrong with the nomination process.

I think Lefty O'Doul should be in...maybe not enough MLB time put in, but I think it's time for the HoF to recognize that the PCL at that time was nearly as good as the Majors and many players who could have played MLB played in the PCL because they were from the west coast and wanted to stay there.

Sure, if somebody does something that wrong, ban him for life. But his life, not my life. After all, who are you punishing after he is gone? You are hurting your credibility, imho.

The only reason that Ron Santo isn't in the Hall is that Ernie, Billy, and Fergie are and you can't have four HOFers on a team that never did anything. At least that's my opinion...for the love of God and baseball, let Ron Santo into the Hall!!

Cheers,
Geno

The Hall of Fame is already full of Mediocre Players. My Hall of Fame would have about 75 players in it.

Ive got to agree with Jerry - perhaps more than 75, but the Vet Committee has diluted Hall membership enough as it is.

Deacon Phillippe, Ed Reulbach, Tony Oliva and Turkey Mike Donlin (who wasn't nominated). Hey how many guys do you know you have a regular issue card which states how many consecutive times they batted .300 on the front caption? T213-2. He was a brawler, a carouser, a ladies man, and a helluva player. He left baseball a few times for a career on the stage or otherwise he would have been a shoo-in. What a travesty like Marquard, Schalk and Tinker are in and Donlin is not.

As a forever Pirates fan I would have to vote for the Baron of the Bullpen --Elroy Face --I never worried once he entered the game --for a little guy he had a great forkball and a very big heart.

If I could just get one guy in, it would be Ed Reulbach.

Jim Kaat would go in if I were allowed a second selection.

And Lefty O'Doul can go in third.

If I had more selections, I'd start "picking" guys to take out of the Hall. I'd need a couple of dozen votes for that. Kirby Puckett honored with Babe Ruth??? Gary Carter in there with Cy Young??? Insanity, or ignorance. Put those guys in the Hall of Popularity...

Mr. Reulbach should go in. Anyone who does not see that should read Bill James' section on Ed in the first version of the Historical Baseball Abstract, and then read his Politics of Glory which is about the Hall itself. Then read the 1915 (I think) Baseball Magazine article about Ed, and you'll understand how "managment" curtailed Ed's career as punishment. Then you'll undersand that Ed being out is inexcusable.

At least Ed is on that great long list. Hope those folks quit suffering from rectal craniums and vote Ed in.

Would you believe the 1978-1979 SD Padres have four members in the Hall of Fame?

Gaylord Perry
Ozzie Smith

tbob: Mike Donlin also did a couple of jail stints. Probably not something MLB would want attention brought to these days, when it is trying so hard to be protective of it's image (grin).

With all of those "T206ers" listed, I hope at least one of them makes it! (Reulbach or Cravath perhaps?)

Of the more modern players, I think Tony Oliva would merit serious consideration.

Why isn't Ted Simmon in, is a good question.

A better question with a sadder answer is...

.........

.......

.....

....

The sad answer first, "Idiot New York sports writers."

::::::::

:::::::

::::::

::::

And the better question, "How did Gary Carter get in ahead of Ted Simmons??" Let's see... management kept Simmons in the game, to take advantage of his knowledge, but Carter is gone and plays golf...
