Default Question about the T206 Ty Cobb cards.......

Posted By: josh

Is it just me or does it seem like there is never a shortage of the cards on Ebay? Not the rare backs but the most common backs. It just seems like there are plenty available in grades up to 7. Is this correct or am I way off?

I agree, there certainly appears to be a consistent supply of them on eBay . . . most notably the red portrait.

Default Question about the T206 Ty Cobb cards.......

It's my understanding that there were far more Ty Cobb cards printed and distributed than any other card. The population reports and eBay listings seem to bear this out. Some of the t206 experts can confirm.

Default Question about the T206 Ty Cobb cards.......

Posted By: Eric Brehm

I don't know if there were more T206 Cobb cards produced originally, but there are definitely more of his graded today than of any other player. This is undoubtedly due in part to the higher economic incentive to submit Cobb cards for grading. Also, I would guess that more of his cards have survived down through the years because of his popularity as a player.

Here are the top twenty most often graded T206 cards by PSA, among the 66,130 total cards labelled with "Unknown Back" (comprising about 70% of the 94,388 total T206's graded by PSA to date):

1. Ty Cobb Portrait Red ... 815
2. Christy Mathewson Dark Cap ... 542
3. Ty Cobb Bat Off Shoulder ... 456
4. Ty Cobb Bat On Shoulder ... 393
5. Frank Chance Portrait Yellow ... 376
6. Walter Johnson Portrait ... 361
7. Johnny Evers with Bat Chicago Shirt ... 353
7. Tris Speaker ... 353
9. Addie Joss Pitching ... 338
10. Christy Mathewson Portrait ... 332
11. Ty Cobb Portrait Green ... 331
12. Walter Johson Hands at Chest ... 329
13. Cy Young Portrait ... 327
14. Cy Young Glove Shows ... 321
15. Cy Young Bare Hand Shows ... 316
16. Hal Chase Throwing Dark Cap ... 298
17. Roger Bresnahan with Bat ... 297
18. Nap Lajoie Portrait ... 292
19. Hal Chase Portrait Blue ... 284
20. Christy Mathewson White Cap ... 276

was one of the superprints, so that, combined with four examples in the set, seems to make it a fairly easy to obtain card.

I have been tracking Cobb red's with Polar Bear reverses for a while. My estimate is that about 5 to 6 a month are listed on eBay.

Default Question about the T206 Ty Cobb cards.......

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis

The POP reports may (or may not) reflect the availability of T206 Cobb's. A more accurate indicator is the number of
T-brand backs that the four Cobb's were originally printed on..

Here are the T206 Cobb's as a function of their confirmed T-brand backs.....

Cobb (red)............24 diff. (Super-Print having the most variety of backs than any other T206)

Cobb (bat off).......17 diff. (very high number of backs relative to other T206 cards)

Cobb (green)..........8 diff.

Cobb (bat on).........7 diff.

Also, consider that more Cobb's (regardless of set or condition) are graded more than any other card in the hobby.

And, why not, if you can consistently get several $200-400 even for a Grade 1 Cobb.

If you are looking for nice Cobb's in PSA 6 and 7 you are going to have to wait, and wai, and wait, and wait.

If you are looking for "filler" quality - always available.

Nice for the grade = no tilt cut, 45/55 or better centering, no print problems, no smudges. NOT easy finds. Folks are letting go the low end for the grade and keeping the high end for the grade.

Just my observations, Steve.

I agree with Steve. I have looked at pretty much every T206 Cobb in EX 5 or better that has come up for sale in the last two years -- many dozens of cards -- and nearly all of them have looked weak for the grade to me. More so than has been the case with cards of most of the other T206 HOFers. I don't know why that is.

I have found that even the SGC 30 and 40s for most Cobbs seem very weak for the grade to me. My impression was that they give the Cobbs a break when they grade but maybe it's just that people are selling a disproportionate number of the Cobb cards that are weak for the grade. I have an SGC 30 that I've sworn would be lucky to get a 20 if it were any other player.

Agree 100% most Cobbs look very weak for the grade I've sold 6's for better 5's and 4's I am still looking for the right Green, and have only within the last few years found really clean versions of Bat on and Bat Off.

Here's my two latest..these most likely will be the cards I keep for my set this and a PSA 6 Old Mill Bat Off but love the EPDG backs.

Here's the one I ended up picking for my Green. Got it at the 2007 REA auction I think. I haven't really seen one in any grade that I like better.

The SGC 50 Bat On - looks too good for the grade, must be a tough to spot flaw that knocked it down - otherwise on a superjet express to PSA to get it into a 5 holder.

The PSA 4 Cobb green - same comment as the SGC 50.

Both are very nicely centered, both have clean picture/background, and the corners appear decent, and both have goodly amount of white borders.

what are the toughest backs to find the cobb cards with? i don't mean lennox or cobb tobacco, but the more readily seen backs. i see a lot of cobbs with polar bear backs, but haven't really ever seen one with a sovereign back, especially the bat off and bat on variations. anyone have a pop report broken down to backs they could post?

A sample of the various Cobb's from my Piedmont, Sovereign, and Sweet Caporal (Factory 30) sets.

Note.....The Green Cobb with the Piedmont 150 back....90% of these Piedmont Cobb's will be found
off-center to the top border.
A well-centered Green Cobb, is found with a Piedmont 350, or a Sweet Cap 150, or a Sovereign 150
back.
