Default The unthinkable has happened!

Posted By: Adam J. Baxter

A couple of months ago my son Chris, who is a voracious reader, asked if he could look at some of my vintage collecting books. I found this funny since he has shown little interest in baseball cards and lots of interest in cards featuring little Japanese monsters and robots. He picked out Lipset's encyclopedia and a 2004 SCD Catalog. After reading those several times I offered to let him take home the 2004 standard catalog (he lives with his Mom) and since then he has shown a growing interest in vintage material. His mother allows him some monitored time on Ebay and his seemingly mild interest turned to action last night when he placed a bid on his first pre-war card. When he bid on that card, he had to outbid another ebayer and that other ebayer was.....ME.

Irony has hit the Baxter household like a freight train.

On a similar note; I had given my wife a Christmas "wish list" this past year. We each have separate ebay accounts. An item was listed in late November that I really had been looking to acquire. The list that I had provided to my wife was so expansive that I never thought there would be a chance for duplicate bids. I rarely focus on the high bidder's identity and consequently sniped my wife and bought one of my own Christmas presents. We did not realize this until the item arrived in the mail.

My kids think my "habit" is ridiculous, so no danger of that happening.

jimivintage on here only hopes that happens to him when his new daughter reaches the age of loving baseball as much as he does. I am expecting my first child in Sept. and hope that the same happens to me about 10 years from now I only hope that he/she doesn't outbid me

Thanks for sharing..

I have an eight year old son that I'm hoping will take an interest in the hobby as I've just returned to it myself over the past year.

I figure I have to be able to get him to sit through a whole MLB game first before I can expect him to become interested in the cards.... but I'm working on it

I take my 4YO with me on my occasional trips to the local card shop where he always gets a pack of Pokemon cards. I have tried to convince him that he can get an entire box of 1990 Fleer baseball cards for the same price as that one pack of Pokemon cards, but he'd still rather have the Pokemons. sigh.
