I won the Grover Alexander lot of 3 House of David items. One postcard features Grover in a House of David uniform, and another PC features him standing next to a group of players sitting on donkeys.

Not enough HOF'er and donkey collectibles out there on the market...

Jeez, I didn't even realize it was ending. I just got my catalog a couple days ago.

They had some neat boxing items in there.

Mark:

Nice pick-up on the Pop Lloyd!

I went after 4 of the Negro League items but prices were extremely strong IMHO. I guess this auction house is no longer a secret anymore. My guess is that possibly the same Negro League collector (with very deep pockets) picked up the majority of the major pieces in this auction. I could not believe the 25th Intantry panorama that sold for $31K with the juice. Also, the Indianapolis team photo went for an extremely high price as well as the Cienfuegos postcard. The other item that I liked was the TG Album in beautiful condition and probably a fair price based on that.

Oh well, 0-for-4 on this one...........

Yep, 0 - 4 for me too, Phil! Charleston, Torriente, Cienfuegos PC, and the Rube Foster/ I. E. Taylor PC. Couldn't believe how high some of the team photos went also (all over 10K with the juice)!!! I need a better job.

Oh and yes, nice Lloyd, Mark!!

Ken:

I was hoping that it was you who picked up the Cienfuegos postcard, you've been looking for a Bell & Wells item for a while now.........

Pretty sure I was the underbidder on that. Figured with all the writing on it, I could easily snag it for 2-3K. I'm thinking your theory about one very wealthy collector may be correct. (sigh) The quest continues...

So, Chris, you're the one who topped me on the HOD/GCA lot. At least Ol' Pete went to a good home. I got one item a 1940 Joe Louis card.

The surprise for me was that 1905 Van Ooyen PC of Lajoie and Jeffries. I wanted that one for my Jeffries collection but at nearly $3K, it left me asking "WTF?" Recession, what recession?

Adam, you have to pay baseball card prices for that one, not boxing card prices.

I kinda got that, Jeff. I just had no idea that the card was so valuable. I don't think Hakes did either...Does it have a history in that price range?

history? First one I have ever seen.

I think I predicted $1200 (plus juice) to the eventual winner, so I was way off too, but with a card that rare the final price doesn't really surprise me. Who knows if/when another will surface?

Default 1916 Indianapolis ABCS & the Rogan Panorama

The Rogan Panorama went nuts - I remember a cabinet of the same team sold in a Hunt auction about 10 years ago and went for a very high price the 20K range which I thought was crazy then.

I remember being offered a loving cup that was presented to Rogan as the MVP of some industrial league. The price was in the $5K range. This was over 15 years ago. I called Richard Merkin about it and he almost jump out of the phone telling me to go and buy it. I could never locate the dealer again. It was in Brimfield so trying to relocate anyone there was almost impossible anyway.

The ABC's piece was awesome but the image itself was only 5x7 and sold in the 10K range. I guess that maybe the best Ben Taylor piece known though.

Needless to say, those two pieces were great.

You're right, Mike. Those are probably the best images of Taylor and Rogan extant and very early images of both as well. I'm sure the fact that neither player ever had a card issued of them bumped up the prices significantly as well.
