Default Nap Lajoie (affordable) recommendations?

I’m a HOF collector and am looking for recommendations from experienced collectors - if you could only add one Nap Lajoie to your collection with budget of ~$500 or so, what would ya buy?

My own “rules” for my collection are:

- card is from active playing days
- player on team most known for
- less traditional cards, are fine

Thx for your suggestions!

Jeff

I love the sweater and the shadow on the left side of that image.
The E90-1 Portrait is really nice too.

The T206 With Bat, if it has bold color, is an awesome card.

I can't imagine there's a more affordable Lajoie from his playing days than this 1913 game card ...

It came as a game issued in 1913, and all 50 cards in the game feature the same image. Cards had either a red or blue tint to the Lajoie image (I don't think either is really more scarce than the other). So there are many of them out there, and they certainly can be found in high grades as a result of being issued with rounded corners, but the price definitely is right!

It sure is a nice price! And I like the image of him too.... the game back is kind of quirky and fun - adds some diversity to my HOF collection.

Do you/others have an opinion of the Fan Craze Lajoie? Also nice looking cards but seem to be quite a bit more than the game cards you suggested.

e90-1 Lajoie is a great card. T206 portrait is top 5 portraits in the set for me.

You could still get a T206 Lajoie portrait in a very low grade at that budget. I would hurry as the prices keep going up on them. The batting pose as been going up quickly as well. The throwing version is still reasonable. Good luck with the search.

Thx so much.... I am leaning toward the T206 portrait (if I can catch one before it gets too expensive!)

A Lajoie portrait PSA 2 just closed at $741 with PWCC. Pretty high in my opinion.

Yeah, saw that one... I was in on it for awhile but I blew past what I set as my budget. I’ve noticed that once some cards blow past their previous high water mark for price, new sellers enter the market to cash in.... and for me as a collector, I hope that settles the price down a bit.

I saw that card as well. It looked like it was graded low, it seemed more like a 2.5 (possibly even a low 3). Last week there was SGC 3 (2) that sold for under $600 that was not as nice (coloring).

The Napoleon Lajoie Portrait card has rightfully become a highly admired card in the industry.

I agree as I am not in it to invest but to collect. If the prices go up on my cards i won't cry about it either. lol. I just go for low grade cards as I am not too high on the condition but more for the set.

I've just read an article that people that grew up in the 1980's are now entering the collecting game to rekindle their youth. They now have some money in their pockets to spend. I would be one of those people. It has been hard to stay with a budget because a lot of the cards I am looking for do not appear often.

Good luck.

I would've taken that card for $600. I just missed it.

I understand that PSA sells for more but I wonder if going with a consignor helped a bit?

What are thoughts about the Fan Craze Lajoie? Kind of think the design is cool, Art Deco back and all.... not that familiar with the set.
