Default Al Jurgela

Greetings Al, if those Miñoso cards are very rare, as for the question you ask me about the catalog, I answer that it is not that it is sold in Spain, what I have always said is that a Cuban friend of mine who lives in Spain, when he comes to Cuba and takes the ones he has at that moment and he sells them on ebay cubanbaseball, the last time he took the three volumes, but I don't know if he sold them, because right now I have no connection with ebay, but I published it because They ask me, last week one of the members of net54, who had ordered volume 2 from me, will deliver it to a person who travels to the United States and when he arrives, will he send it to him along with other things he wanted, when my friend Victor come back to Cuba from Spain, you will surely take the ones you order from me days before the trip.

A few days ago I was reading an auction where José Mendez and other cards from the Romeo y Julieta cigar collection were, but I have no connection and I don't know the result, I would appreciate it if someone who reads me informs me of these cards.

Jorge, thanks, but what I asked was the result of the auction, that is: how much did they pay for Mendez's cards, another from an Almendares player and the amateurs that you mention, I'm interested in knowing how much they paid for each one $$$ .

Jamie, thank you very much for the information, without very rare cards, years ago when the first of the professionals appeared, they invited me to comment on them, since before putting them on ebay, they took them to my house, I had them from that year 1922, but amateurs, and from that previous group, those that did not sell on ebay, I bought them and have them in my collection, I explained my considerations, by the date that appears on the back and the date they were printed 1922, I always expressed that they were original and not fakes, these that were sold were never in my hands, and I have not seen them, but I think they are from that series, I would like to see them front and back, thanks.

Thank you very much for the information on the Romeo and Juliet cards, the most important ones are those of the Almendares team, but the amateur ones are also rare.

Default Profesor Manning

Nicknamed Dr. Cyclops, Manning began his professional baseball career with the Negro League's Newark Eagles in 1938 and would spend the majority of his playing days in Newark (1939-1942, 1946-1948). A member of the championship 1946 Eagles team, Max finished that season with a record of 11-1 along with the second highest strikeout total in the league that season. Manning also served four years of military service during World War II from 1942-45.

From Manning's SABR biography: The (1946) season began with a bang as Day pitched an Opening Day no-hitter on May 5 against the Philadelphia Stars. Manning recalled losing his first start but recovering quickly, saying, “Oh, Lord, it’s going to be a bad season for me. That damn army … and so on. Then I won 15 straight.” Mackey — with his fellow future Hall of Famers Day, Doby, and Irvin back in the fold — led the Eagles on a season-long tear through the NNL. Newark finished 50-20-2 in league play, and 56-24-3 against all competition, as the team won both the first- and second-half NNL titles.

Kansas City had posted a 43-14 record in NAL play and, like Newark, had won its league’s pennant without a playoff series. The Monarchs had their own stable full of future Hall of Famers, including outfielder Willard Brown, pitcher Hilton Smith, and the immortal Satchel Paige. Thus, the World Series ended up being a tight affair that required the full seven games to determine which team would be the champion of the Negro Leagues in 1946.

The Monarchs prevailed, 2-1, in Game One at New York’s Polo Grounds on September 17. Two days later, boxer Joe Louis threw out the first pitch prior to Game Two in which Manning took the mound at Ruppert Stadium and pitched a complete game, striking out eight, as Newark evened the series with a 7-4 victory. The teams split the next two games before Manning made his second start in Game Five at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Manning again went the distance and struck out seven Monarchs batters, but he lost a 5-1 decision as the Monarchs took a three-games-to-two lead in the series. The Eagles then came back to win Games Six and Seven, 9-7 and 3-2, at Ruppert Stadium to claim the title.

Is it a translation of the American guide or does it have entirely different content with coverage of Cuban baseball.

Default Spalding Guide in Spanish 1885 ( cont)

Jason, I answer the question of the Spalding Guide in Spanish from 1885, they were authorized to be printed in Cuba, they have some information about baseball in the United States, and the regulations of that year, but the most information is about Cuban baseball, the different teams and the leagues that existed at that time, very interesting data, Valentin E. Frau, was also authorized to send information to Spalding to publish in the United States guide, I show you some photos of the guide that I took a while ago , if you who read me in this thread are interested, I will continue with this topic, let me know.

I looked the day you posted and can’t find anything. Maybe it is my search skills, but I searched by seller name and a generic Cuban baseball card catalog. Anyone have a link?

Rolando I have a couple of questions

1. Why did you have to tell me that there is a 4th Diez Muro. I thought I had the complete set at three (and thought I might have the only complete set in existence
2. Why do my copies look like they have run over by a truck and yours look like they were just printed yesterday

I just wanted to chime in and say that this is one of the most interesting threads I've read and I've been here from the start -- when we "migrated" from the "Full Count Board" way back when.

I also want to be among those thanking Roland for sharing his collection, knowledge, and passions for these wonderful and still mysterious cards. I have only a few and are among the prizes in my collection. I hope to add to that small group.

I think the first I heard about the Cuban issues was in an article in the Vintage Collector magazine, which was a high quality actual paper magazine back in the 1990s. Since then this board and some of members have been the best sources for learning about these issues.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this is the kind of thread that realizes the potential of this board and I'm just thankful for that.:

Jason, I have been lucky enough to get them for a good price in good condition, now in photos you will see some, I show a photo of the books with dedication and signed by Diez Muro, one of them is from the regular edition and the other from the deluxe one, look at the difference in the paper, one is yellowish and the other looks white because it is made of good quality paper, the photos look better, see Ruben Foster and other in Havana Team.

Richard, the Victoria Collections album, does not have any guidance that explains what it was, I think it is the only collection that I have not been able to decipher, I show another image of the album with the Dandridge and Mc Duffie cards.

Default Napoleon Reyes #73

I show card #73 of Napoleón Reyes, the rarest of the "Happy Caramels" Collection 1945-46, they are all difficult, this one does not have any stamp on the top of the card and is very rare, there are several models of stamp, but the most Rare of all is the one with the prize card.

As someone who likes overprints and period stamps on cards, those are great to see. Thanks again for sharing, Roland (and others too).

Default Caramelos Felices #73 Premium card

Leon, The rarest and most difficult card in the Caramelos Felices 1945-46 collection is the prize card, above the card a square stamp with the factory address, telephone number and the ink signature of a manager, now shown on the photo, but they are all very rare.
