Default Ohtani so far tonight

2 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

One hit allowed thru 6.

First 18 batters 12 strikeouts.

I really think that as many accolades as this guy gets they are nowhere near enough. This is like no one since Babe Ruth kind of stuff. I think many fans have become numb to what this guy is capable of doing.

last year Ohtani pitched 130 innings and had 639 plate appearances. How many times in the last 100 years has a player pitched 100+ innings and 600+ plate appearances in a season?

He's on pace for similar #s this year.

Absolutely! Proving to be one of those oddball underrated superstars. I thought last year was a fluke but it looks like he’ll continue being unreal this year too. Even if he was just a solid power hitter who could reliably hit 20-30 homers per year while staying north of .200 and still be able to win 8-9 games from the mound, he’d be a hall of famer. If he can somehow keep this production up he’ll go down as one of the top players ever.

The one thing I dislike out of him and Trout, and I actually really like this as a personality trait normally, is their modesty. It’s awesome that arguably the two best players in the game today are so humble and seem to shun the spotlight, however a stronger media presence would be really good for the game, especially now. That being said, great guy and so fun to watch. Hope he keeps it up!

He pitched a good game last night.

Hall of Fame....that's pretty funny.

Let's see if the 2 greatest players of all time (he laughed) can get their team into the playoffs finally.

Have not seen the Carp's name in the box scores lately, he on the DL already?

I've thought about that too. Despite how well it speaks of their character, having these unassuming guys in Anaheim is a practically the equivalent of accomplishing these things in obscurity (especially with the current state of baseball's popularity in the US).

If they played for the Yankees, you'd have a better chance of a Magic/Bird to begin the '80s NBA boost to the sport

Now hitting .211 with a 4.40 ERA. Yes it's very early, but let's be real, he is off to a slow start.

Well, the labor dispute has turned April into the de facto spring training. Lots of fellas are off to slow starts, and I've seen a lot of injuries as well.

I don't follow much modern baseball, but I do like Ohtani. Great athlete and ambassador for the sport.

Absolutely. We live in Orange County and last year Ohtani really got my young son into baseball. I'm very happy for that.

BTW, Shohei is having a nice night at the plate....

Default interesting stat

Ohtani is currently leading his team in strikeouts (as a pitcher he has 30, next closest has 22) and stolen bases (he has 4, a few others have 3).

Has that ever been done before in a full season?

I believe stolen base statistics are unknown until 1885, which cuts out a lot of the candidates.

John Ward led the league in steals in 1887 and 1892. He led the league in K’s in 1879. He stopped pitching in 1884. He was a full time player in the field for some of his pitching seasons and may well have led his club in both at once, but the missing SB stats before 1885 make this tough to prove. Somebody like Ward probably did it at some point. I can’t think of an example of the guys from 1885-on. Would love to hear if someone else knows, it’s an odd feat

Over his last five starts (today is July 7th), Ohtani is 5-0 with a 0.27 ERA, including 46 stikeouts and nine walks in 33 2/3 innings. He hasn't allowed a single earned run over his last four starts, while striking out at least 40, a feat accomplished just eight other times since earned runs became an official stat in 1913.

He is truly an All Store and an amazing athlete.

It is a shame that with him and Trout that team is still below .500 and will not make the playoffs again

If he hasn't allowed any earned runs, how many shutouts has he pitched?

No complete game shut outs like most of modern baseball sadly the complete game is almost a myth
