The game of football has lost a legendary figure.
Pro Football Hall of Fame coach and legendary broadcaster John Madden died unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, the league announced. He was 85 years old.
"On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

What a great loss. He could make even a boring game more entertaining just because he was there describing the action in his unique style. RIP John Madden.

My favorite Madden moment was in a 90s Redskins 49ers game, in rain and muck, at the end of the game the camera cuts to Joe Jacoby (a Madden favorite) sitting alone on the bench splattered with mud. Madden says, Now there's a football player and lets that thought hang. A few seconds later he adds in a quiet voice something like, There are very few places I could go that I wouldn't want that man with me, or something like that.

Maybe you had to be there, but it really conveyed the man's reverential attitude towards the game.

And a sad commentary on the HOF voters that Joe Jacoby did not make the HOF.
