Default May Pick Up Thread

I don’t think I ever started a pick up thread. But this haul, purchased in April but arriving in May, seems like the perfect time for a first.

1896 Paterson Team Photo with a very young Honus Wagner
1903 Horner photo of Eddie Plank taken from a larger, damaged composite

Nice Allegheny Ryan, fascinating story on those, only 1 set exists from my understanding. Makes them all 1/1's.

Not a card, but I think it counts as card-related. The complete 44 page book that tobacco smokers could pick their prizes from in jurisdictions where the ATC was allowed to use and honor coupons in their cigarette packs, covering the years of the card boom (which were by this time less legally restricted than in years prior). A baseball cost 50 tags, 100 for a higher quality Reach ball. Baseball gloves were between 75 and 150. For 600 you get a revolver, for 2,200 a lever rifle, for 3,000 (and terminal lung cancer) you could get a 'repeating' (pump action) shotgun. For only 35 tags the "latest and best" toothbrush. If you smoked 3,800 tags worth you could get a hand-carved mahogany table. 20,000 tags (okay, how is the buyer still alive at this point?) you could get a fancy 6 piece furniture set.

Hadn't seen one before, but then again I haven't looked for this item specifically before.

Yeah. I'm going to miss 'my' MATTY. (NOT Mine anymore - just expressing seller's regret)

FYI- Pop Report shows 2, but that was because the guy I bought it from sent it to be regraded...guess he was hoping for a 6 or 7. Let that be a lesson to us all.

You may not remember, but I tried to convince you to sell me the Matty at least one time prior!

Yes, this is a 1 of 1. It’s my understanding that all 1904 Allegheny’s are 1 of 1, as a single set was produced and sent in for patent or copyright and that’s where these come from. This card used to sit in a psa flip- there are 2009 and 2010 sales of the card as a 6. Then, the card in a 5 sells in 2015. So sometime between 2010 and 2015, the card was cracked out and then reslabbed (at a lower grade)

Great start to the month! And congrats Phil, that is a seriously impressive accomplishment, not to mention a group of really beautiful cards. Thanks to Jay (t206kid) for this member pickup, a T3 upgrade that I've been chasing for most of the past year! This one is right in my wheelhouse, a PSA 1 with great eye appeal.

Mr. Plank, bst pickup.

This is actually a franken-Plank. There's a T206 glued to the other side of the card. Don't think I want to try giving Eddie a bath, so the other card is just going to stay there. (Poor T206 card. Trapped on Eddie's backside. Never again to see the light of day. With my luck it's probably a Wagner that I own but will never know about.)

The T206, I have been hunting for for well over 2 years (if not 3) ...... The E91-A, I picked up within 2 weeks (maybe 3) after starting a new adventure .......

But, then again, it's all part of the ............

Fun, fun, Scott

Congrats Phil! It was fun watching you narrow down the E98 master list. And great looking Mattys...they present exactly how good looking 110+ year old cards should.

Thank you Steve.

Derek, the thrill is in the hunt for me, everything has a sell price including this Master Set, I'll just keep upgrading it until the right opportunity presents itself. Currently working on an E94 set so I'll just keep plugging along on that one.

Went on a bit of a postcard run in April, gotta love mail day.

Got this Ruth a month or so ago, but hadn't posted it.

Just got this Ethan Hawke signed ball and letter. They shot a scene for an upcoming Netflix movie on my farm. Ethan was a really nice guy and greeted us afterwards, shook hands and signed these for us!

Beautiful Nap Lajoie! I only have a handful of t206, but that's one of them, Sweet Caporal back. Best looking Lajoie, IMO.
