Sounds like a good pickup. Any of those rarer white back Mantles?

Well, the Mantle specifically is much rarer in white back. It's a white back short print. Not sure all the white backs are like that. Check COMC to see the difference in amount for sale and selling prices for the rest of them.

Only cards 101-180. Cards 1-100 the white backs are slightly easier but no difference in price.

This story raises a legal red flag to me. If this guy was just renting the house, then he wouldn't be the legal owner of stuff contained in the attic. That would be the property of the home owner, unless the home owner explicitly gave it to him.

So it could be that the guy was selling you stuff he didn't own, in which case those cards still belong to the home owner. Unless I am missing something.

lol. That's what I was thinking. Even though my landlord in college was kind of a dbag I never thought about selling the stuff he had stored in our basement.

Default "Depends on what the meaning of..."

"...clearing out" is. Get Rudy Giuliani on the case to get this legally on the up and up.

I hadn't read the original post as though they were stolen; that could explain the inability of pawn shops to give a reasonable offer. But it sounds like you may have received good title to the cards if you were on the phone with the original owner when he approved the sale or liquidation.
