Default Player collectors- are you out there?

Posted By: Wade

We see many posts regarding type, set, and HOF collectors, I was wondering how many player collectors are out there. I collect only one player and I'm wondering if there are others out there that do the same. Do you collect a few players and do you try to get more than one of the same card?

I personally like this collecting style as it is a very narrow scope and keeps me away from other more expensive interests. I would love to see some scans if you've got them and why do you collect that one or two players? I hope to post some pictures later.

I only collect cards of my great-grandfather, Frank "Bullet" Miller. I try to purchase all of them that I come across. So far I have Obak T212 and T4, 1911 Zeenuts, and Home Run Kisses cards. Other cards of his that I know of but have not been able to get are 1912 Zeenuts, Gilmartin, and Western Playground.

I figure that some people do collect certain players. I know of two hobbyist that collect different things but when it comes to a certain player they just seem to want more. One person is a LARRY CORCORAN OJ collector and the other has something for T206 Hans Lobert cards. Both persons post here, one a little more frequently than the other. The Lobert fanatic has (I'm pretty sure) 40+ T206 Loberts and counting... At least the Corcoran OJ collector has a choice between two different poses... OK John, "yes" there only two poses, but many different ad varieties for those two poses. I'm pretty sure he'd take a dupe of a Corcoran OJ if it were available.

Cool display, Brian. Good job on scoring the T4! Even if it is trimmed to the oval, that's certainly a very tough one to find. Good luck finding that Western Playground....yeesh.

You probably know this already, but most modern collectors are player collectors.

He's not for sale but here's a pic of the Western Playground. Of the 42 Western Playgrounds I have owned this is the only one on thin stock I have had....good luck in your search..
edited to add that after looking at him throwing right handed I am not sure this is the same Miller.....

Ben: I think the T4 is the pride of my collection, even if I did have to over-pay to get it.

Leon: Thanks for the scan, I'll run it by my grandfather and see what he says. I always assumed that was him on that card (I have a scan that Mark Macrae sent me). I know he was playing for Des Moines around 1909. I'll go through some of my stuff and see if he was a left-handed batter.
Side note: My grandfather always likes to tell the story of how Frank only ever hit two home runs and they were both in the same game.

You could say that I am a player collector in that I am trying to get one card of every major leaguer that appeared on a card featuring him as a major leaguer from 1908-45. Any time I get a second of a player, I sell it or trade it.

I collect Earl Moore, though somehow my Wally Schang collection doubles my Moore collection in size.

For the most part, I try to stick to Foxx. Though too many other things rear their ugly heads, and I inevitably end up with Gehrig, Wilson and Buck Weaver. Whom I also like. I have hundreds of Foxx items. My goal is to get one graded example of each of his cards. All pins, all magazines where he appears on the cover etc. etc. I have spikes with his name on them. Silver awards given to him. A whole and complete 35 wheaties boxx with him on it. etc. etc. etc. I am a sick man....please help me.

I almost forgot, I have about 50 original photos, and wire photos of him, and his family. Most show him playing of course. Some very interesting pictures.
