In 1964 and 1965, Hasbro sold a baseball board game called "Challenge the Yankees". It was a dice based game, that included 50 player cards (25 Yankees and 25 All-Stars). Day 44 (February 13, 2020 – 044)

I don’t have many of the small Oriole schedules, but this is a fairly uncommon 1972 Baltimore Orioles schedule put out by Crown gasoline. The schedule pictures Brooks and Paul Blair the great Oriole center fielder.

I had a 1972 Orioles Special Parking permit out so I might as well post that today. It’s a permit that the Orioles used for just one game; this particular permit was not used.

This is a 1976 -77 MSA drink lid with a unpunched straw hole. The lid has a waxy coating. Havent seen to many of these on ebay lately.

Quitcrab, very nice Brooks disc. Here's a 1982 FBI Ken Singleton disc with the complete box bottom. I assume the 1981 FBI Jim Palmer will forever be on my want list.

You are right these lids don't show up that often. I also have the Jim Palmer lid. They have been associated with 7-Eleven stores in some references. Does anyone know if they were distributed through 7-Eleven or somewhere else?

Today, I'm highlighting the 1965 Elmira Pioneers. The Pioneers were the AA affiliate of the Orioles from 1962-1968. The 1965 team was led by Earl Weaver and finished 83-55. Some notable future Major Leaguers included Mark Belanger, Dave Leonhard, Larry Haney, Bill Dillman and Lou Pinella.

Enjoying the minor league items that you are posting. Some I have never even heard of before. It is nice that some of these guys made the bigs and some of those made a tremendous contribution to the Baltimore Orioles.

The Orioles had a number of different companies, typically local, that would sponsor events and also advertise their company; Bethlehem Steel was one of those companies. The mill used to employee thousands of individuals in their Sparrows Point mill outside of Baltimore. In Memorial Stadium they had a few Bethlehem Steel Family night events over the years and typically offered some type of program or memorabilia type item with their company name well represented. The below is a 1969 Bethlehem Steel Family Night booklet with some of the Orioles players pictured. The pictures look similar to the Orioles picture pack photos, but on the back it has interesting facts about the steel company.

Won in a recent auction—Super excited about these 1930’s Orioles minor league autographed photos.

Also won a 1957 scorecard, which I was very pleasantly surprised to learn has been scored (sort of) and was from a game against the Yankees. Brooks rode the pine behind HOF George Kell. Mantle, Berra and Ford are HOF from the Yankees side.

Based on what I found on baseballreference.com, it looks like the game was played August 9, 1957.

I guess that’s considered a program that I posted from 1970 earlier (post #185) w/Belanger on the cover. Shame that’s the last one. I know I have the photos from 1970 as well, but I think that’s my extent.

I do appreciate the years of these programs and the photo booklet years as well. That’s a great program you have in your collection; hopefully one day I’ll find one. It’s just nice to know they do exist and I know what they look like too. I know I’ll be checking back on this thread for reference material in the future.

I remember reading about Martin Family Night items a few years ago in Bob’s post. That is definitely a RARE set. I do have the Brooks, but it’s not in very good shape, but at least I have it. I also “need” the program!

I don’t have much in way of unopened cards, but here’s a Topps 1978 Rack Pack of 39 cards with Brooks showing in the middle of the group. This is his Topps Record Breaker card for most consecutive seasons with one club; the last Topps card issued while he was playing.

Here's the 1968 Orioles Yearbook with a great cover of Brooks and Frank. One of my favorites. I also have an original Morton Tadder photo from what I assume is the same photo shoot, but didn't make the cut. On a side note, a conversation at spring training with Todd Olszewski, the Orioles team photographer, confirmed that the Orioles won't be printing either a media guide or yearbook this year. Sad times for guys like me that enjoy those types of items.

Today's featured minor league team is the 1968 Miami Marlins. The Marlins were an Orioles A affiliate in the Florida State League. While the Marlins posted an impressive 87-55, they produced only a couple future O's, Marcelino Lopez and Johnny Oates. Jim Palmer did also pitch in 2 games for the Marlins that year.

For some reason, the 1968 program doesn't show up as often as some of the other Marlins programs and was one of the tougher ones for me to pick up.

I didn't know if you noticed or not, but the picture I uploaded in post #739 showed Miami Stadium and has "THE SPRING TRAINING HOME OF THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES", but above reads "HOME OF THE MARLINS".

Really don't know much about the Marlins that were an Orioles affiliate in Florida so I appreciate you posting the program and the photo.

Such a rich tradition between the Orioles and the city of Miami! One year prior, Cal Ripken Sr. managed the Marlins and here is a Miami Herald Press Photo of him:



Bill Ripken liked this photo so much, he asked to borrow it to include it in his new book "State of Play," which came out earlier this week.

Here is also a team signed ball from that '67 Marlins club....Amazing that Jim Palmer in just the prior October was pitching in the World Series, was sent down there to work on his ailing shoulder in the warm weather (started five games and pitched to a 2.00 ERA)

This was from the card shop I worked at when I was a kid. The owner made this with cards laminated to the cardboard. It was made in 1979. It was supposed to help the customers date cards and different issues. He gave it to me a couple years ago. The lamination has slipped and a couple of the cards have been lost but I’ll replace them one day. Anyways right in the middle is 1975 Mr Robinson.

Day 47 (February 16, 2020 – 047)

Rawlings put out a Trade Digest for companies that distributed their athletic equipment. The one pictured today is a Rawlings Trade Digest for Distributors of Rawlings Athletic Equipment dated February of 1965 (VOL. 8, NO. 2). The Trade Digest pictures the ’64 MVP’s Brooks Robinson and Ken Boyer on the cover (in their suits with a Rawlings glove in hand) with the statement “who’s on third?” I don’t see these type of items very often and I would think are relatively scarce. There’s another example of Robinson and Boyer pictured on a Trade Digest as well, but don’t have that particular example.

Back in '86 I found this pint sized carton at an area convenience store (I recall it being the only Ripken they had) and when I got home, I carefully put a small hole in the bottom to empty the milk to keep the carton intact.

Shortly thereafter, I wrote a letter to Beatrice Meadow Gold asking for a flat, unused carton and they (thankfully) accommodated me.

Some random thoughts on why I’m enjoying this thread so much, beyond the fact it’s Orioles related.

While some items being posted could be classified as high end big ticket items, many are ordinary items that have meaning to the contributor. I’ve been amazed at all the interesting stories behind some items. Many, if not most, of my posts are items that my kids aren’t going to retire on, but that’s ok with me. I don’t get many opportunities to share my collection, with those who would appreciate it. I’m sure that’s the case with most of us.

Close to 40 yrs ago now, I got rid of most of my 1950’s – 1960’s Topps sets and yes even a 1952 Mickey Mantle, to concentrate on what had meaning to me, the Orioles. I’ve never collected with a dollar sign attached to items. If I liked it, I added it to the mix. Do I wish I still had that Mantle, I sold for $800 (a good price at the time)? Not for my collection, because it didn’t mean anything to me then and still doesn’t. I wouldn’t change a thing. I have Orioles collecting buddies that I’ve been trading and dealing with for years and years and can’t remember the last time money exchanged hands between us. Remember it’s just a hobby.

As I ponder what to post each day, I hope you are enjoying my items as much as I am yours. Mark, thanks so much for letting me connect with others that I probably wouldn’t have otherwise. I’ve even acquired some new items because of the thread, that I greatly appreciate. As we continue throughout the year, don’t be afraid to share an item, because you feel it’s not interesting enough.

For today's offering, a couple random newsletters from 1969. I don't have a ton of these in my collection, but will pick them up cheap at shows when I come across them.

It would be interesting to see how the fans would vote now on the All-time Orioles teams. I'm betting Brooks would still lead the way.

Thanks for your perspective on collecting. Mine is much the same as yours since I collect what I enjoy, not really what is valuable even though some pieces may be worth decent money to others. Take the piece I posted today; I don't think it's valuable, but I personally love the Rawlings Trade Digest.

While I enjoy seeing other individuals collection of cards, like Mantle, Clemente, Koufax, etc. I just doing get the same enjoyment of collecting them myself. I know I followed the Clemente thread all last year and was a great time seeing all of the items posted.

So thankful others are contributing to the thread and personally I love seeing all the great Oriole items posted. I'm glad that we can connect as collectors and help one another out.

If I’m not mistaken the item today is a placemat (I think). Seems like one anyway; let’s go with it. This is from 1968 and pictures many drawings of the Oriole players illustrated by artist Jack Havey. There are some popular Baltimore Orioles players from 1954 to 1968 pictured.

Here's an interesting item. I know nothing about it and hope that someone out there can provide more information. My best guess is, it's a flyer promoting a baseball themed USO show and involved players touring Vietnam. It looks like players from the Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates were involved. There is a date written on it, 26 Nov 1970.

Any other thoughts or information is appreciated.

Unsure if you saw this or not, but this site talks about the USO and MLB. In an article called, 1968 All-Star Special: Talking Baseball in Vietnam. The site I viewed it on was slpl.org
