Find your own sources, if you truly don't know already what is happening, which I suspect you do. Read what Justin wrote and take it from there. Or don't.

The thread started by kickitup, on the front page.
This is a small hobby, dominated by guys who like to talk. My guess is you know some of the same people I do and they would tell you, I am sure you carry far more weight with them than I do.

I think it is entirely possible, based on what I know, that you will be able to buy it back for less than 40K.

Was just talking about this topic with a buddy/collector. We were saying the simple fact is that prices are rising, and some guys are just bitter and angry over it. Bitter and angry because they either...

A) Can't afford the card(s) they want.

B) Didn't pony up in the past, for whatever reason.

C) Sold their cards in the past, and can't move on/let it go.

This anger and bitterness colors lots of posts and theories. It is really nothing more than that.

Some human beings will complain when it is raining and when it is sunny. They are the unhappy ones.

The happy ones don't care if a baseball card goes up a few thousand dollars. Just build a collection you love looking at. The old K.I.S.S. principle.

None of the above for me. This is a great time to be a dealer. Never been a better time, actually.

One hell of a rant Bob. I noticed your in pharmaceuticals. Did you not get your refill today?

Conspiracy or not, prices are absurdly off the charts for some cards. If these prices are for real, I'm excited, because my net worth just got a healthy "bump".

I don't see how this is sustainable. Justin "retractor" Cornett admitted he manipulates bids, and his ebay username confirms those practices. He is probably one of many doing the same thing.

If the PSA 8 Rose Rookie prices hold up for the next few years, I'd be shocked, but not disappointed.

I was speaking about the Rose 8, which was a $4,500 card two months ago. Now selling for +/-$16K . I'll wage a dinner at National in Chicago this card is -10% next year.

If it's being manipulated, you win.

I hope you're not talking about me, because I bought the RCs I wanted in the space that's going insane well before this started so the only effect on me is a big (if temporary) spike in what they are worth. Maybe I have posted what I have posted because I know what I am talking about based on reliable information. Then again, you and your collecting buddy sound like you are really in the know so I must be wrong.

o, that's right because that wouldn't be the prudent thing to do, but then again you couldn't give away your koufax 7, right?
Simple. I am a collector, if I have a card I like I am keeping it until I decide for reasons other than money to sell, and besides I don't have any of the big ticket stuff in those high grades anyhow.

Well of course, who doesn't? What does that have to do with my point? If I buy a card I want to get the best price, and same if I sell it. But that doesn't mean it's only about money. If it were then yeah I would be selling quite a few things for sure at these record prices.

IMHO, Bob, you'll be able to get the Rose "9" back within a few years for less than $35 K. You were extremely sharp to sell when you did. I think that what Pete has been saying, as well as numerous others (which I have been largely oblivious to for the last several months due to a veritable avalanche of appellate work), is that the current '50's and '60's market for key cards especially has all of the earmarks of a speculative boom. Various machinations and manipulations have often accompanied such booms. If you want confirmation with regard to what those earmarks are and the fact that the inevitable, ultimate result of such a boom is a bust within a rather short period of time, I suggest you read the writings of the eminent Q. David Bowers on collecting and investing in rare coins, a collectible field which has been organized for about 120 years longer than ours, is quite similar in many respects, and for the most part has already experienced the very same trends--sometimes many times over (just a few examples: TPG, and the ultimate recognition over time of the extreme rarity and desirability of variations, such as different backs in T206, the M101's, and '55 Exhibit Postcard Backs, and the thought expressed several times and often subject to widespread belief that the market was fully priced). Bowers has been involved in coins since he was a teenager in the '50's as a dealer and collector, and is beyond reasonable dispute a well-recognized expert in the field. He has exhaustively studied collecting trends and is frankly the most knowledgeable individual in this area I, as a devoted student of collectible fields, has ever become aware of. Let me end this post this way: Your recent CJ Jackson purchase is likely a lot safer than the supposed value of a PSA 9 Rose!

Best wishes to both of you,

Larry

Awesome car, did you get to drive it before you sold it?

To Larry, I'm not so sure you can make a direct comparison to the coin market on this case. I know nothing about collecting coins, but cards seem very different in that there are only so many key cards most collectors focus on. Especially for guys like myself who prefer postwar. I do agree these prices, and certainly the growth rate will be impossible to maintain. But it's not like the entire hobby will shift away from HOF rookies. Whatever the reason prices have been moving so much in the last couple of months, I believe they well settle closer to where they are now than where they were before.
