Default So you have $300,000 burning a hole in your pocket

and you're marveling at all interesting items in Goldin's latest auction. Which do you buy?

Lot A: the 2018 Panini Prizm Gold Prizm #280 Luka Doncic Rookie Card (#03/10) – PSA GEM MT 10 "1 of 3!

OR

Lot B: the 1916 M101-5 Blank Back #151 Babe Ruth Rookie Card – SGC 20 FR 1.5 and the 1925 Exhibits Lou Gehrig Rookie Card – PSA EX-MT 6 (MK).

I don’t think you’ll come close to lot B for $300k when all is said and done.

Maybe be who would go with lot B have a different bidding strategy than those going after lot A.

I'd buy this

and then invest the rest.

Do you think all the dads were in a tiff when Ruth came along? Did they all light pipes and talk about Roger Connor while their kids wasted money buying packs of gum instead of cigarettes?

Wasn't there a scene in either Pride of the Yankees or The Babe Ruth Story where a kid has his cards and wants to get in a pickup game and gives his cards to the other kid in order to play, and the kid says "you can keep the Ruth, he's a rookie."

Not sure you can even do that with $3 anymore.

You forgot option 3 - light the $3 on fire. Less environmental impact than the inevitable burning of the 88 donruss.

I own versions of these two cards and I would flat out decline any offer for $300k; I would probably reject $400k. So, to be able to buy them both at $300k is a no brainer. And BTW, the Ruth and Gehrig on Goldin are, together, already above $340k with buyers premium, so option B is not a realistic option.

The only way that sort of money is showing up is when my life insurance shows up and I'm cold and buried.

So you have $300,000 burning a hole in your pocket...I would douse the flaming currency with water, then try to salvage as much as possible with the judicious use of a hair dryer.

If 300k is burning a hole, bid on the Gehrig and hope it holds. What an underappreciated issue that is finally getting some attention!

If I had $ 300K burning a hole in my pocket, I can honestly say it wouldn't be going into sports cards. Talk to the next generation of collectors, age 7-18, they are not buying sports cards, they are buying Pokemon! My son has roughly 25 graded HOF and potential future HOF rookie cards all Mint or Gem mint that he has gotten for X-Mas and his B-Day over the years, never even looks at them, but put a pack with the chance of a Charizard pull in it and he's all over it. Where I used to have 1000's of baseball and football cards at his age, his collection is 1000's of Pokemon & Fortnite cards. He's not taking baseball & football cards to school to trade, it's Pokemon and has been for a couple of years.

Their biggest advantage I see is they are popular with boys and girls, not just the boys that play the sports. Don't believe me, go to your local WalMart, Target or Dollar General and let me know how many Pokemon cards you see, for the last month these displays sell out as fast as they can stock them, plenty of sports cards to be had for us old folks, but not a single Pokemon.

I'd pay off my house.

Reminds me of a joke:

A hooker approaches a collector at Hilton bar at the National and says: "I will do anything you want for $200."

The collector asks: "Anything?"

The hooker says: "Yes, anything."

The collector thinks for a minute and says: "OK, find me a T206 Cobb."

Which is why we don't ever see hookers in the bars at the National...

That is one perspective. And I disagree with some of it.
I can think of some great cards I would buy. I don't think baseball cards go down too much in the next 20 yrs. I was at a bigger local show yesterday, in Allen Tx, and money was changing hands at every table. Sales seemed very brisk. Most of it was shiny stuff but the vintage was doing well too.

Where are you at that retail stores have basketball or baseball cards for sale? Cards are being bought at as soon as they go on the shelves if not before.

I would go with Lot B. If I can get it for $300k when it will probably close at over $400k. Plus having to of the most iconic Player Rookie cards. Plus the upside on them would continue to be good over the years. So as a collector and investor that would be my play

My response (B) may be biased, but your question may be rhetorical anyways. You bring up a great point of relative value. I think we are all happy and apprehensive over the recent rise, but this is evident more so in modern cards. We have seen some trickle down effect (33 goudey Ruth’s and 52 mantles) into prewar and vintage, but the relative value between modern and vintage (including prewar) has only gotten greater. Means two things, people will identify this and move their overvalued modern junk into marquee vintage cards, or when we get a consolidation, vintage will hold its value much better. Answer probably is both.

Thinking about OP. With $300.k would have to seriously consider all 4 of the T206 Cobb's, very nice mini-set of iconic cards. Possibly could dabble in the PSA 7 range, maybe even have some money left over. Gosh, that would be nice.

I'd definitely prefer lot B - Doncic may end up being one of the all time greats but there is also no guarantee that he doesn't blow a knee out tomorrow. Don't believe its possible, I've got several Mark Prior cards I can sell you. I also have a difficult time accepting that modern cards are true rarities when the rarity is artificially created merely by slapping another colored border around the card or making it holographic, etc. Unfortunately for me, any extra cash in my pocket these days is / will be paying for a couple of college educations.

Looks like 300k won't be enough for either option, but I would obviously go for the second like everyone else here. Were I actually spending it I would try to find a nicer looking 16 Ruth

Not sure what the Gehrig closed at, but was over $700,000 with the juice I think when I passed out.
