Default 1926 Spalding Sports Co of America - back variation

Didn't the later year Ruth, 1927 Copyright, come with this back that says "Save these Pictures" rather than the one with a bio? This is the first baseball one I have seen like it and it's Schalk.....anyone else?

edited for clarification

Leon-
My understanding (I think Brian and MIke Wentz could give you much more detail) is that the ad backs are scarce and the "bio backs" are "common"... I have heard that some of these add backs were cut out of advertising sheets -- I have no idea if that's true.

By the way are you interested in selling any of these -- I posted in a request in the BST already ?
(I could care less about the backs -- in fact I probably prefer the ones with the bios all other things being equal)

I recall Mike Wentz being the expert on this issue and the backs. Hopefully that knowledge can be shared here.

I should mention that I do have some of the other, non-baseball, athletes in their glassine envelopes, that have ad backs. I've never seen any other baseball ones though.....however, I am sure they must exist.....regards (did I use too many comma's )

Leon,

Based on what the hobby has yielded thus far, I believe the distribution between ad backs and bio backs to be roughly equal with the majority of the ad backs coming from Alan Hager's find. The lone 1927 Spalding (Babe Ruth) is a bio back with slightly different verbiage and a copyright date of September 1927 instead of November 1926 (See image below).

That's the first ad back I've seen in less than NrMt condition, which makes me feel a little better about their authenticity.

Are there two different Ruths? One from 1926 and the other from 1927? Are the fronts the same? Is the difference only the copyright date?

Not sure what price list he photocopied, probably his own (like his grading label).

cmoking,

Yes, there are two different Ruth cards. The front is exactly the same on the 1927 variety but the reverse side shows two distinct differences: (1) the copyright date and (2) the second line of text which reads "Had hit 356 to start of 1927" instead of "Has hit 356 homers to date."

Darren,

The only known example of the 1927 Spalding Ruth (SGC 50) sold for about $1600 in August of 2003, although I suspect the value would be somewhat higher today. I would estimate a 1926 Ruth would sell for approximately $400 to $500 in that same condition.

I believe the ruth I own is a 1927 version. I'll check when I get home and post a scan.

Note the "Nationality, American" line comes later than the other posted Ruth back--another variation. This one grades VG-EX by my standards.

thanks! I have the 1926 version, which was trimmed in very bad way, but interesting card to have nonetheless.

Any estimations on the population of these cards in general & of the Ruth?
It appears I have the second known Ruth 1927 with the other variation I noted earlier on this thread. Any other Ruth's out there with the 1927 copyright?
Wow, could this be the first 1/1 card I own that is not stamped 1/1.
Comments, please.

There actually three backs that I have seen - bio backs, blank backed, and ad back. I once went to
Alan Hager's house to by some of my Spalding football....The story goes that Robert Edwards had a large group in his auction. Unfortuantley, he didn't realize that they were all ad backs. Alan Hager bought every one or almost every one. He graded them in his ASA holders - they wouldn't sell good so he graded alot of them PSA.

Incidently, 10 + years ago I bought a group for an old-time collector who had a Red Grange mixed in with alot of the others from the set. Some were blank backed and some were bio back. I had to buy the whole group just to get the Grange- it had obviously been cut from some sort of promotional ? sheet - but it was legite. I had Mike Baker at GAI autenticate it. I have seen uncut sheets of the whole set (with no Grange obviously. I have heard rummor that there are a few other "promotional" Spalding that exist Gehrig?- does anyone out there own one???????

Default Jack Dempsey 1927 back

Hey guys - I had to resurrect an old thread here. I recently picked up the Jack Dempsey card from this set with a 1927 back. Are there any other cards from this set known to have the 1927 back, aside from Ruth & Dempsey?

I'm still hoping to get more information on the 1927 Copyright backs from this set. If anyone can help - I would very much appreciate it.
