Default Topps Gold

Hi, new here and I'm mostly a lurker on any forum but I have a question for those in the know. Ive been tossing cards in a closet since the mid 80's but I'm not really a collector. Recently I started listing some cards on my little auction site and when checking cards against Ebay listings I keep seeing Topps Gold in the title line. My question is what makes a topps card a topps gold. Is it the gold lettering on the card or something else and does it really make a difference to folks looking at the listing of the card?

I believe Topps Gold are modern redemption cards that you have to mail away (or enter codes online) to win.

I really depends on the specific set you're talking about. The first Topps Gold cards were in 1992. Regular gold cards had the players name area and Topps logo replaced with gold foil and were found randomly in wax packs, and in more regular numbers in rack and jumbo packs. There were also redemption cards, those are the "Topps Winner" cards, that actually include the word "Winner" in foil on the front as well.

In 1993, there were no redemptions (well except Black Gold, but that was a completely separate set), and the gold cards again had the Topps logo and the banner with the players names replaced with gold foil.

In almost all cases, a Topps Gold card is a parallel version of the regular base card with some manner of gold foil on it replacing some part (usually the name and Topps logo) of the regular design.

Thanks for the response guys.. I'm still a bit confused about it so I think I will take the safe way out. I think I will not follow the Ebay example for the listing title and just put 2000 Topps instead of 2000 Topps gold for any card I look up....
