Default Ohtani had shoulder surgery today

Looks like Dave Roberts ran a nice bluff during the World Series. Ohtani managed to get on base four times after the injury, but I suspect he and Dave Roberts both knew he wasn't going to be hitting anything at all.

Clearly he wasn’t right. Kind of a ballsy move to even play him the last couple of games. Must have had medical opinions that he wasn’t going to make it worse.

Hope it's not a costly surgery...

After three surgeries is he really going to pitch again?

I thought he injured his non-throwing arm?

I would be concerned about this if I were the Dodgers. In the past he's hurt his elbow and the league already knows that an elbow does not mean an end to power (he just hit 50 homers after all).

But the shoulder....that could be a problem. Not a leap to assume complications could sap power or create a lot of bad habits when he resumes swinging. I feel like the same risk is involved with shoulder injuries for a slugger as with back injuries.

Yes but the "glove arm" still plays an important role in pitching.

I think an interesting question is: "How much is that World Series championship worth?"

If Ohtani becomes a 4-6 WAR player for the next five years, the Dodgers don't win another ring, and then Ohtani retires, would he have been worth it to the Dodgers?

from a financial stand point? Probably. In addition to the value of the 50/50 season capped off with a WS win, don't underestimate the revenue he is generating for the team in Japan even if he becomes "merely" an all-star (4 - 6 WAR) guy going forward. At 31 next year that was coming fairly soon anyway most likely.

What is the likelihood of ANYONE being able to pitch/hit over a lengthy period of time before injury gets in the way. Noone's dont it at such a high level.

You know what would complete the narrative? What if Ohtani can't hit next year, but can only pitch?
