Default Why did they remove the Trees? Chief Bender cards...

Does anyone know or have an idea why they removed the trees in the background on the Chief Bender cards?

I think the "with trees" version was released as they call it "Print Group 2, 350 only". Bender "no trees" came later in "Group 3".

Later, in 1914, 1915, and 1916, Bender appears on 6 cards in the T213-2 Coupon set. They made a trees and no trees each year, with team changes for both cards.

Then, in 1919, when they released a set of 70 cards, Coupon included both trees and no trees...(shown here...) Post any Chief Bender cards with any thoughts on trees and no trees.

Because it's not the same picture... (see: right hand, collar, belt loops, positioning of his glove to his pants)

Thank you for the reply, Brendan. I was asking a rhetorical question and hoping folks would post some of their cards. I realize, in a literal sense, the thread could end with 1 response. The cards are not identical, but they are as close to being the same pose twice, as any T206 image I can think of...Rob

I have never thought much of either the 'trees' or 'no trees' Bender cards...they don't look a lot like Bender in my eyes. In my opinion his E91 card is a better representation of his face, as it used the same photo as was used on his T206 portrait. And of course his T206 portrait reigns supreme.

As far as the trees or no trees question, I think the various card manufacturers, such as the Coupon folks, just had more choices of a very popular player to select from.

And now that I think about it, I believe Coupon chose action shots over the portraits from the T206 set, so utilizing the two action shots of Bender made sense, even if they are very similar.

Thanks, y'all, I really am getting some nice, unexpected laughs from this one. I guess I should've known it's sort of a "Who cares?" question that I posed. I really need to get back to work. ha-ha

What got me thinking on this topic, is that I just picked up the T213-3 with trees to go with the no trees toward the type 3 set. For the Type 2 set, I've had to pay hofer prices, for what is basically the same card to me, 5 times already and I still have 1 more to go towards the set.

Who says e91 cards don't look like the players? That e91 is a nice card for sure...Rob

Default bender

Bender - The background looks like there is a field of grain, then perhaps a forest, and then a yellow background. Is the yellow background trees that are changing colors, or could it be a mountain range in the distance?

Or, perhaps the green background is the outfield, the brownish yellow is the warning track, which is on the edge of a forest?

Maybe napalm being dropped on the jungle?

No, I am not drunk. Yet.

I dunno Rick. Sounds to me like you were on a BENDER.

The with trees in the original post is really interesting.

He has a clear number 4 on the sleeve.
he was with Richmond in 1919, and New Haven in 1920.
Did either team use uniform numbers? Some minor league teams experimented with them, and there was a brief major league experiment before that.

And, is this the first baseball card to show a uniform number?

Great Bender collection, Jim. I think the top photo looks a lot like the "no trees" card.

Here are my T213-2 Bender with Trees. I have the 1914 A's card and the 1915 Baltimore card. I don't have the with trees 1916 Phillies card. It must be a 4 and not an A b/c it is not on his A's card. It reminds me of the T206 Marquard with the 8 on the sleave...Rob

Today, I received the 1916 Phillies Bender with trees card, it has the marking on the sleeve. Finished all 6 Benders from the set. 172/185

I dont have many Benders. Aside from his T206s, this team PC - far right top row (I love the A's - Plank, Waddell, Bender, Mack and later Collins and Baker), and this 1906 Lincoln Published PC (which is an "extra" and open to trading/selling) is the only Bender I own right now
