I know I'm excited! I got the catalog last time like a month after the auction ended last time. I hope I receive a catalog soon on this one.

Yeah, well they're all compromised TPG holders so no need to bid

I cannot tell from the posts, are these jokes at auctions in general, or this house in particular.
I signed up to bid at a few fall auctions, REA being one. if there is something I should know about, better now than later lol

All is good with REA.
Our “jokes” are just related to some discussion threads on this forum where someone mentioned the group was to narrow focused on the Ruth’s, Cobb’s, Jackson cards vs others.
This particular auction has so many really good cards and so many Ruth, Cobb, and Jackson cards.
I have put bids on over 20 cards. So many I like and We like but never enough funds for all

Yep, all jokes. REA is very legit and this particular auction is disgustingly good.

I'll break ranks and say it's a perfectly fine not spectacular auction considering the bar REA has set over the years.

I realize they are the gold standard and sucking up to them has a certain cultish panache on the board, but this seems to be lacking the ooomph factor.

Bring it on. I'm ready for it. . . . .

The amazing thing I’ve discovered about auction houses over the years is that you can express your opinion about them, good, bad, or indifferent, and they are still very happy to take your money at closing time. And you don’t get a discount for blowing smoke up their ass either.

Thanks, what happens in these instances? do people notify REA directly? Does REA read this board? do they take action? or does this just go through and sell for an outrageous price?

I am sure someone will call it to their attention promptly, if they didn't read it themselves.

what I don't understand about this hobby...
How is it possible that the most knowledgable, talented people are underground collectors as opposed to the institutions whose very own business depends on their expertise in this area?

In any other arena, TPGs would be out of business. Aren't TPG fees based on the card value? i would imagine fees from grading cards worth $50-100k would allow you to hire the people that can do this type of work.

Why don't these guys on blowout start a TPG company focused on high end cards?

How difficult would it be for TPG to drop some minute microscopic fiber (or something) on every card they grade and when they receive a card in the mail scan it and all of a sudden pull of a history of their past experience with the card. Wouldnt this go a long way in eliminating fraud?

I feel like it lessens the pull when you have ten 1986 Jordan rookies PSA 7. Just kinda ridiculous......but it's a sellers market I guess.

REA is my favorite AH but, man, when does it reach the absurd? Over 730 pages and nearly 3,300 lots! Seriously?

I agree with that sentiment. As always with REA, there is lots of amazing stuff that can't be found anywhere else. But seeing so many of the same common Jordan, Mantle, Jackie and Cobb cards is a bit meh. There are over 11,000 1986 Fleer Jordan cards graded "8" or better. That feels a bit like eBay seeing so many of them in one place.

REA is the best. No worries at all. Their stellar reputation is WHY people feel comfortable about making jokes, because most pre-war guys know them very well and there's no danger of being misunderstood. Of course your question is a good reminder that not everyone is as familiar with every aspect of the hobby as we think! Good luck and now you're "in" on the jokes too!

I would assume the multiple Jordan rookies is due to the current market being so hot for that card. As far as others, I’ve seen multiple T206 Cobbs, 52 Mantles, and other high profile cards like Leaf/Bowman Robinson’s for multiple years at this point.

Just imagine if all get paid for in the same week after it ends. I'd hate to be in line behind Brian at the Post Office when he goes to ship them.

Posting this to the memorabilia forum too, but I am very interested in acquiring any one of the 7 Federal League contracts comprising REA Lot #1719. If anyone is planning to bid on those, and would like to partner up and/or sell one off to make up some of the investment, please let me know!

There is A LOT going on right now in the vintage world.

HA, REA, Lelands and PWCC listing stuff on ebay every week.

It’s tough to focus and I feel like less eyes will be on items and less money will be spent because people’s minds can go 50 different places. Just my 2 cents.

I mean a t227 Cobb isn’t exactly super rare, but its not t206 common either. There are 4 currently in auction

Great comments. I've purchased several cards from REA. They don't accept credit cards or PayPal (unlike Heritage) so it tends to keep a guy in check. But where there's a will there's a way. I wonder if I dare open the catalog when it arrives. It could get ugly.

Interested in seeing how these lots are handled, given the blowout evidence:
SGC 8, lot 11, is currently at $15k

PSA 3, lot 758, is currently at $3,600

Default REA (Robert Edward Auctions)

There are two lots (991 and 1006) of 53 Bowman color singles that I'd love to own. I put in a bid on each lot, but I know that in the end, I won't be the winning bidder.

It looks like the cards have been taken down from the auction.

I've read a few posts about the joys of getting the REA Catalog in the mail so I decided to sign up for one this time around. It came today. My god - it's a coffee table book. It's incredible. And whomever posted about the smell a while back I couldn't agree more.

Several of the cards I'm interested in were "submitted by REA" Looks like an equal mix of SGC and PSA cards. My question is how do they decide which cards go to PSA and which go to SGC?

For example, there are 2 1933 Goudey #144 Ruths. The lesser one was submitted by REA to PSA and the better of the 2 to SGC. Why not both to PSA or both to SGC? I'm just looking for thought process here.

Also 1914 Cracker Jacks. Many submitted by REA. Some to PSA, most to SGC.

Looking forward to reading input on this.

Justin

PSA has qualifiers (OC,MC,MK, etc) that could detract from the final price, while SGC doesn't use qualifiers. I don't know if the cards in question have flaws or not, but this could be one reason.

Justin don't run up the prices of the CJs on me...I'm only bidding on a handful this time!

Looked like a link to a porn site. That was a first. A few members clicked on it and went into cardiac arrest.
