Default The mystery of those Springfield minor league 1908-09 Rose Postcards

Posted By: RobertS

Remember those odd Springfield minor league postcards that sold on eBay a few months ago? The cards prompted an interesting discussion here about their derivation and authenticity (see previous thread: http://www.network54.com/Forum/message?forumid=153652&messageid=1077948429).

This past weekend at a postcard collectors club meeting in New York, an odd Rose postcard surfaced that appears to answer all the previous questions about the Springfield cards.

The newly-discovered postcard appears to be a blank "do-it-yourself" kit, of sorts, issued by Rose for individuals or businesses to insert their own photos and seal-up. One of this card's previous owners has penciled in the words "PERSONAL PHOTO POSTCARD (UNUSED)" on the postcard's reverse.

An in-depth analysis of this aspect of the Rose set is available here, http://www.vintageball.com/rose.html, complete with photos of a major league subject, several Springfield examples and the new "blank" postcard.

It seems, these Springfield cards were probably not offically issued by The Rose Co., as they appear to be identitical to this blank. If anyone has any additional info, please post it and I will be happy to add it to this Rose page.

I've been on the verge of getting myself a Rose postcard for years (they're pretty pricey), but never have. Will certainly do....does this "rent-a-card" type deal explain any OTHER unexplained phenomena in baseball cards (or SOMETIMES baseball cards)? Seems to stir a memory, but can't quite place it. Of course, blank-backed (literal and figurative) cards provided space on their backs (and fronts, sometimes!) for several ads--sometimes limited (the Sporting News M101-5 and 4) ()Tobin lithographs--front AND back...).

in the next few issues for a complete article on the Springfield Rose pcs from expert Jerry Spillman. By the way, they won't be added to the Standard Catalog as consensus is that they are an early "collectors issue" and probably one of a kind.

I owned a generic Rose postcard I carried to many a national. Tom B. (autograf) saw it. I finally sold it to a Rose PC collector. Dan.

Here is a link to view the entire 13 card buy.

Since this thread was brought up and not by me... I will finish it and speak my mind to feel better.

This lot on Ebay was to be split up fairly between the "Greenmonster" Jim and "jacklitsch" Steve and myself "husband-of-tammy" JC. When the lot closed, there was only one underbidder "Sammybaugh" Larry going for it as the competition (Steve, Jim, JC) had partnered up and it went at what I felt was a great price of around 400.00 per card. When the auction was closed, Steve IMD sent out payment where he rec'd the cards within days. By that time "Greenmonster" Had already paid for his part (5 cards) and demanded the best cards with all the stadiums in the background. Then "Jacklitsch" found out that Maggert was a PRO player so he decided to keep that one and tell me that I could have the rest to choose from after I BITCHED about how unfair the split-up was going.

"Jacklitsch" wanted me to ask "Greenmonster" if he would send me just one of the stadium cards since I got left out of the picking (JACKLITSCH's fault) and he thought that all 13 cards were the same and it didn't matter. After I asked "Greenmonster" he told me he would give me his decision via e-mail.. Which never came until I e-mailed him to remind him.... Then this was his reply

"Scraps!!!............the hell with this guy Steve, I'm sendimg you a check and you can forward me the two cards JC missed out on. Jim"

He "Greenmonster" tried to buy my part of the deal within the same week that they arrived and I'm still trying to figure out what I had left to choose from in the deal.

All-n-all Steve tried to make things right as I have done a couple of other deals from him and I feel like he just messed this Group buy up completely with me getting the shaft on the deal (price has nothin to do with it JIM, it's the moral and knowing the difference between right and wrong). The Greenmonster can ROT in !@#$ and I'm glad to see your auctions NOT doing great and NOT meeting reserve as I will NEVER support them!

And Yes, I'll say it again.... Jim you talk and write like a GRUMPY OLD MAN THAT HATES THE WORLD!

I would love to have you on the undercard at the Nationals for everyone to see what happens to GRUMPY OLD people like you trying to be someone your NOT.

I feel better now... and will only Bitch once a year on the board ... Al Rosen last year and "Greenmonster" Jim this year...

If you have read this far you can go to my gallery to view the Rose Cards I ended up with .. Look under 1908-09 Rose
