[QUOTE=BaltOrioles;1946989]All of the Orioles from the Salada and Shirriff coin sets were originally issued in orange. It is fairly easy to swap out the paper inserts with another color if the plastic on the original coin is damaged. It is also easy to swap Salada and Shirriff coins. There is a post earlier that says which coins were issued with each type back.

Thank you Alan. I went back, found, and saved your original post on the subject. I appreciate the information,

Mike

One of my passions is the history of the Orioles franchise from 1954 to present. I know some of you also collect stuff from the minor league Orioles before 1954 which is also very interesting. I guess the main reason, I've avoided collecting minor league Orioles items, is that the roots of the current Orioles team come through the St. Louis Browns franchise. I believe at least a couple of the old Orioles teams can be traced forward to the current Yankees and Detroit Tigers franchises. Maybe someday, I'll get the itch to expand my collection to the Browns.

That passion for history has led me to collect photos of every player to ever appear in an Orioles game, but they must be pictured in an Orioles uniform. There are a couple players I still need to find.

Wally Westlake 1955 (I know a photo of him exists)
John Buzhardt 1967 (Many photos as an Astro or White Sox, but have never seen an Oriole photo)

I thought some of you might enjoy a challenge. Over the next few days, I'll post pics of some Orioles and let you try and identify them. Hint: All of these players have appeared for at least one major league game with the Orioles.

Hint #2: They all have something in common when they played for the Orioles. Some will be easier than others.

I hope you have fun.

Alan,

You know I’m terrible at this so I’ll go with the 1st person that came to my mind when I saw #1 - Vern Stephens (I hope he at least resembles him...)

Hey, you put a picture of Brooks and I’m likely to guess right every time...

I do have other HOF'er bats, decal bats, mushroom bats, ring bats, etc.

I have a run of yearbooks 1954 - 2000 but the Hartzell covers are my favorites. James Hartzell drew the first Orioles cartoon bird.

I also have a run of team signed balls from 1954 - 1990. Pictured are some key Orioles baseballs with the '54 and '55 (bottom row starting on the left) having two players, Howie Fox and Tom Gastall who died during their playing days. In 1955, Fox was stabbed to death in a bar room incident and in 1956 Gastall crashed a small plane into the Chesapeake.

The metal Orioles Route sign hung outside Memorial Stadium and came from the City of Baltimore. The Mezzanine sign hung inside the stadium.
WOW! Just awesome...

Scott,

You picked a GREAT one today. I remember the first time I saw that card and just had to have it. It has such a great setup and you rarely see this come up for sale.

Correctional Industries! The inmate furniture shop produces good quality at a fraction of what you would pay on the street. Just takes a little longer to manufacture but time in most cases is not really an issue.

Day 15 (January 15, 2020 – 015)

Sports Collectors Digest, from January 15, 1979 picturing Brooks at a night game; very cool pose and angle by the photographer. This is the same pose used on a local baseball card set put out in the Baltimore area called, “Pictures of Champions”; a small card set of some of the Orioles players.

I've been working to make our extra room (den) a place to display my junk; it's just a continual work in progress. It was pretty much finished a few years ago and my son got married and moved out into another house. I gave him most of the furniture, television, etc. So, now it's just a process to purchase furniture, display cabinets, to get it back into shape. Plus I wanted to go with a somewhat neater look than just stuff everywhere this time around. Your room is definitely motivation to make my room A LOT better.

Only one guess from Mark, so for those of you interested, here's the list of yesterday's mystery Orioles.

1. Hoot Evers
2. Craig Gentry
3. Kelly Johnson
4. Don Lenhardt
5. Ike Delock
6. Lou Montanez

All of the players wore #14 when they appeared with the Orioles.

On a side note. Lou Montanez won the triple crown in 2008 with the Bowie BaySox (AA) and hit a home run in his first at bat with the Orioles.

Default Orioles Photos

Today's photos highlight the five Orioles that accomplished the rare feat of hitting for the cycle (1B, 2B, 3B, HR) in a game.

Two of the players are easy Brooks Robinson and Cal Ripken Jr. Do you know the other three?

#5. Jonathan Villar - think I got this one right since this didn’t occur that long ago.

I guessed at #1 the last go around, but I did know #4; was giving others an opportunity.

By the way I know you’ve got to be getting tired of those Brooksie items I “need”, like the 8x10 pictured. I need to bug someone else besides Scott (quitcrab) for items. I’m sure he’d appreciate it...

Clint,

I agree. Orioles70, those are some nice seldom seen items. Is the 1974 Deckle the white back or gray back version? Thanks to Mark a couple years ago, I have the gray back. White backs are a little tougher.

The Brooks photo may be his first team issued 8x10 photo. It's dated 1957 on the back, so I guess there's a possibility of a photo printed in 1955 or 56. I know the early team issued Brooks stuff doesn't show up very often.

To me these cards are so cool looking. The "Pictures of Champions" set were 16 cards and are numbered by their uniform. Of course I think the Brooks #5 looks the best in the set, but the one's Scott pictured are not bad at all.

Alan,

I've seen the 1957 Brooks before, but haven't seen any earlier. I don't have it, but I've at least seen another one. I've seen earlier pictures of Brooks, but they weren't team issued. Keep your connections open for another one please...

Man, I'm very glad you were inspired that's for sure. You've pictured some nice and some extremely rare items in the grouping of pictures. Thanks so much for posting these items.

I especially like the '74 Deckle, '69 Super and the '73 Pin-up. I'm with Alan, white or grey back on the Deckle? I'm a fan of the '67 Test Discs as well. Do you happen to have any more of this test issue?

Back in the mid 1980's I wrote a letter to Jim Hartzell which he kindly responded to & included a vintage original drawing (which he personalized):

Day 16 (January 16, 2020 – 016)

Alan (BaltOrioles) is the expert on basically everything Orioles related (programs to include minor league, picture packs, postcards, team issue photos…well, you get the drift; “everything”. In fact it’s even rumored that he was a ball player for a minor league Orioles team. Well, he’s been very generous and helpful when it comes to Orioles items and sent me the two following team issue postcards. They are a 1977 team issue postcard (less green on the bottom right) and a 1978 team issue postcard (more green bottom right). At the time I didn’t even know there was a difference.

orioles70... The Bazooka panels are awesome! Thanks so much for digging them out for all to see. I've been collecting Brooks for quite some time now and still don't have some of the items you've listed. When I started the thread I was hoping I'd see some nice Orioles or possibly a few Brooks items, but it's been wonderful to view others collections and the quality of items they have in their collections. Thanks so much for posting; appreciate it.

Orioles70, very nice set of test issues. I imagine the 1967 Stand Up Frank (and the associated straight-edge proof) will be on my want list for a long time.

Here are a few more Orioles odds and ends from my collection:

1959 Home Run Derby Gus Triandos:

1959 Kiwanis Club Ernie Johnson:

And a few more:

1968 Topps Test Disc Frank Robinson (Of course the crease takes away from the eye appeal but it's probably the only reason I was able to acquire it):

A ticket stub from Al Kaline's final game (against the Orioles, Brooks was the starting 3rd baseman):

Jim Palmer's jersey from his aborted comeback with the Orioles in spring 1991 (purchased directly from his ex-wife):

Quitcrab, I've never seen either of those items and I love them. No problem with players back then picking up a few extra bucks by promoting quackery.

Agree I’ve never seen those either. That pic is great.

Most Brooks collectors have seen this photo of Brooks & Mickey Mantle from 1964 game action and there always was a fun debate whether the Mick was actually safe or out.

Here is that photo signed by both:

And here is an AP press photo (watermark removed on my copy) taken about a second later showing that Mantle was indeed safe:

Alan (BaltOrioles) is the expert on basically everything Orioles related (programs to include minor league, picture packs, postcards, team issue photos…well, you get the drift; “everything”. In fact it’s even rumored that he was a ball player for a minor league Orioles team. Well, he’s been very generous and helpful when it comes to Orioles items and sent me the two following team issue postcards. They are a 1977 team issue postcard (less green on the bottom right) and a 1978 team issue postcard (more green bottom right). At the time I didn’t even know there was a difference.
Mark,

Thanks for the kind words. I can't believe all the great items that people are posting. I'm out west visiting the granchildren for a week, so my posts will be a little sporadic. I'll save the minor league story for another time.

For those interested, Mark correctly identified Jonathan Villar as the most recent Orioles player to hit for the cycle. The other two are Aubrey Huff and Felix Pie.

Mike,

Man, love your collection of items. I've been debating, pretty much since I've been collecting, to pick up or not pick up the 1964 Rawlings glove box cutout. I've had the opportunity to purchase a few times over the years, but never acquired one. Really don't know why specifically, but I sure like the one you have. I guess they all have some type of issue with the corner of the cutout since it was near the Rawlings glove box end. Also, of course I don't have the glove box...

Bill,

The signed piece is nice enough and the companion piece is just as nice in my view.
