Default King of Collectibles on Netflix

Anyone else watching this series on Netflix?

KING of COLLECTIBLES - The Goldin Touch

Series follows the auction house run by Ken Goldin.

I just started the first episode and I'm really enjoying this.

I thought this might be of interest to other members on this Forum.

Of course, you need to have a subscription to Netflix.

Watched the first one and not sure if I'll continue it. Just seems so fake and staged like pawn stars.

The production was done well
The format is not creative.
It is definitely following other reality show formats like a cross between Pawn Stars and American Pickers.
Especially with his daughter being a part of it to have the family banter
And of course the guest experts makes it really feel like the other shows
It is also like a like A large information to promote his business

Hard pass.

Ken will always remind me of his Shop at Home stuff. No personal bad experiences with him in any way...just not my cup of tea I suppose.

I'll hold back on most of my opinion, but will say Ken's not my cup of tea, and I'm not interested in watching any of this vanity project.

It's pretty awful with how they comp raw cards at PSA 10 prices, overvalue $10 beanie babies, and rewrite history with low-comping the "$5 million" LeBron triple logoman once it only sold for $2.4 million. Not to mention how they don't even mention that PSA is owned by the same parent company; that would be a conflict of interest.

Nothing more than an infomercial.

I enjoyed the part when the guy cut the Buyer Premium in half after the auction on the Steph rookie out of the goodness of his heart.

Do you think he would have done that if there were no cameras on him as the auction closed? He met the consignors number and still gave him a discount.

My apologies as I started the same topic under the Water Cooler section.

It was interesting when I received the announcement e mail from PSA, and I quote, "It's finally here. Watch our show." The email also had the PSA and Golden logo above the photo on the announcement.

Not to make a big deal out of it, maybe I've missed something, but has PSA officially merged with Golden or is all this just collaboration for publicity and money?

I've watched all 6 episodes and enjoyed them. We are very limited when it comes to card collecting shows on syndicated tv and I watch just about any show that features card collecting.

Gentleman Jim certainly had quite the game used jersey collection. I've thought about his collection and where he has it, etc. and compared it with Carl Malone and where he had his Dream Team game jersey's. Both were absolutely amazing and significant. However, the bottom line was it came down to money as it always does.

I think my favorite part of all episodes was the gentleman in the last scenario that had his card collection in the attic - crazy stuff. Of course they were leaving and a little upset for "wasting their valuable time", until he took them to the attic - classic stuff!

Both PSA and Goldin are part of the same corporation. Been that way for a couple of years now

I watched all 6 episodes.
I didn't realize that I was just watching a show about Ken Goldin's massive ego.
I thought we would see more interaction on how they actually got the Jackie Robinson collectibles.
The last episode that had the massive collection in the attic was interesting but really wanted to see how they planned on actually selling it.
Every item that they were negotiating for came up with a 20% commission. I assume they meant the sellers commission. What seller in their right mind wouldn't discuss bringing the commission either way down or to zero for a key auction item?
I'll keep watching-because there isn't much on the tube these days.

I watched it. It was decent enough, not creative in the least bit, but I enjoy the topic. It’s cool to see what people collect, particularly some of the technology artifacts that appear on the show (Apple etc). In many ways I found that stuff more interesting than the parade of PSA graded new crap and pokey man junk. Love him or hate him, Goldin has a magnetic personality although I don’t blame anyone who finds the whole schtick offputting.

I’m gonna choose not to playa hate on this one. The guy has built a great business. He’s a self promoter and you gotta think this series is awesome for his brand and empire.

^^^^^^^^ After watching all six, this is the post I most identify with ^^^^^^^^^^^

The last 2 minutes of Episode 6 pretty much say it all.... that man has an ego that knows no bounds. I suppose he deserves credit for building his "empire" but it's just not my cup of tea.

So much of the show was scripted/staged that it's hard to know what was real and what's not. At least they didn't feature Ty Cobb's dentures, and I give them credit for that!

I agree that show was Ken Goldin promoting himself. I did love seeing all the memorabilia that people have to sell.
My favorite was the guy who had a massive card collection stored in his attic. I assume Season 2 will show us what he actually has and what it's worth.

Believe he sold for hundreds of millions to psa. Hes nothing more than a paid shill stuffed shirt for them I'm guessing .

Hate away since he robbed most of our parents and grandparents in the 80s and thousands of people left the hobby because of him.

Just finished watching. Meh, ok. Yes the attic scene was the highlight along with Karl Malone's collection both in ep 6. Also don't know why those Pokemon boxes are worth so much.

That attic Scene was one of the highlights.
I would love to see how they handle, process, appraise and auction all that.
Would love to have seen them do more negotiating like the terms of Seller Premium or points back etc.
Basically would love to see the more behind the scenes stuff

I would love to see that too.

At the same time, it’s hard to imagine a business owner promoting their business through a fancy documentary and showing the customers negotiating preferential rates and discounts on fees. Who wants to admit that their customers have that level of power, and to broadcast it for all the world to see?!!

Now, maybe if it makes him seem like a philanthropist who is out kissing babies and saving widows from burning buildings, then maybe you’ll see him making concessions…

But not because the customer has any power over it. Simply because he’s a scholar and a gentleman. Plus the world’s most magnanimous auctioneer.

I felt bad for that kid who had no idea that you can negotiate the juice. They weren't even going to give him any of the BP on a 170k card. Crazy

But he isn't. When I ask my peers who they would use to auction their wares, Goldin isn't even in the top 5.

Collectors here have successfully predicted nine of the last five market tops.

I binged the show while doing chores yesterday. I pretty much agree with the observations here. It was a standard formula reality tv show with reveals and fake suspense, a telegenic young cast (Dave Amerman was on some of those reality hookup shows back in the 'aughts) who spend way too much time on personal grooming products, and silly pricing. Of course it was a PR blitz for Goldin, so none of the ugly elements of the AH business were on display. You can also tell that they put in three women who really don't have much of a role just to avoid it being a card bro sausage party.

I am considering filing a class action against them on behalf of all the average-looking, unkempt fat guys who are the real hobby professionals; we deserve some tv time too. My lead plaintiff:

The endin' of the 1st episode made me quite disturbed on how the situation turned inta the "Catch Fish" philosophy. When I consign a piece of High Dollar amount, my business side wil be respected!

*This is jus a repeat of Mr Mastro's 101.0

Not respectin' the consigner after agreed terms, with the Beginnin' Philosophy of "Jus Don't Come Back wit out the Jersey!", is a Shameful way to treat someone!

Mr Goldin is respected in this industry because his light hasn't shined on his fishin' technique's as of yet!

I've been in the same position a few times wit Mr. Maestro as he conducted to manipulate the Consigner inta his web of "I know, You don't!" proper gander speech...

10 Million was the deal... abusin' the consigner(publicly none the less!) is right out of Mastro's play book!!!

Spoiler alert... don't read below if you haven't completed the series.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

But for those who have already seen the staged drama...

Does anyone else think that the guy who "privately" bought the Lewis Hamilton F1 card would have done MUCH better, had he just let it go to auction? I suppose Goldin might've set a reserve price, but hard to imagine a card like that approaching a million dollars in an honest auction format.

The $350,000 estimate for a raw Jordan was a bit over the top. 😂😂😂

You think it would have cheapened the bit, if they had shown the other 2 to 3 Jordans that Drake should have also pulled from that box?

Drake ended up pulling 3 regular Jordans and 3 stickers. It was actually a pretty cool event to watch, and I don’t usually watch these things.

I know we have some Maryland guys here so many they can assist.

The “Robbies” in this show are from the former ABC show Ball Boys which ran for a year about 10 years ago.

These guys have a “shop” in Lutherville that also doubles as a shipping depot. I say doubles but it’s more shipping depot than card store unless something has changed recently.

I’ve never heard of these guys (outside of TV), never seen them locally at any shows/events etc…yet they’re played out as some big shots in the industry.

Am I just not in hanging in the right circles over the last 30 years in the Baltimore area or are these Robbies actually some well known guys in the industry?

I can really relate to Drake, must have been enlightening. Maybe next week he can burn 100k in barrel and post it on tik tak

There is no world in which a princess Di beanie baby is worth $1500. To perpetuate that myth is just wrong. The show is sleazy. And I agree with Denny, the treatment of some of his consignors whether or not for dramatic purposes or not is just wrong.

If you want to watch something fun and a lot more wholesome regarding the hobby watch the YouTube show “Chasing Cardboard” which actually does focus on sports cards. The production quality is top notch for a YouTube show.

Reminded me way too much of Pawn Stars. So staged and fake.

This thing is obviously highly produced for entertainment value. It is highly entertaining. I really enjoyed it. If you take it with a grain of salt, I think you will enjoy it too.

I was passing by a TV last night, as a family member said, hey, did you know that this sports collectible show was on Netflix?, as it played in the background. I said, yeah, I heard it was gonna be on, but didn't pay attention to the air date. As I heard Ken's voice, all I could hear in my head was him talking about his nine figure bank account. So I stood there for a few minutes as they were talking about a Jackie Robinson Jersey for ten million and Ken talking about the bidders in the auction, and knowing all of them well enough that he knew it wouldn't go to ten million. I'm like, did he just say he could see who all the bidders were and how much each of them bid on the auction?? That's when I seen enough, and went on with my night.
