Default Grading Frustrations 101

Posted By: DeanoCards

I am so frustrated about grading. First, whenever you buy like a PSA 8...it's almost always advertised as something like "This 8 should have been a 9" or some crap like that.....In other words sellers overhype their car by 1 grade.....then when you go to sell people will tell you...."well that 8 looks more like a 7" (underhype a grade) TO ME IF ITS AN 8 THEN ITS AN 8. A NINE = A NINE AND SO ON.....ANYTHING ELSE GETS US BACK TO THE SUBJECTIVITY THAT COST OUR HOBBY VALUE BEFORE THE GRADING PROCESS......WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS !!!!

Doesn't matter if cards are slabbed or not, when someone is selling something, its always better than it looks. When they are looking to buy something, it's always worse than it looks. Doesn't matter what a 3rd party says, people always think they know better. I know I'm guilty of it when I think a card is undergraded. But then again, I'd probably not be as happy with SGC if everything I sent in was coming back with higher grades than expected.

I pretty much ignore dealer hype in an auction and go straight tot eh scan, then do a read of the description looking for words like crease, reprint, authentic, etc that will be useful to determine the more about the card.

Im also tired of reading stuff like..."this card should be re-submitted" or "this card was undergraded"...well, if everyone worked for PSA, SCG or GAI, then why do we need grading companies? I stopped collecting modern cards partly because I cant tell the difference between a "10" and a "9"...and in todays market, that could be a bunch of $. If you want the card and are willing to pay for that particular grade, then buy it...dont complain about the grade you received....(my 3 cents)

A lot of this ungraded hype would go away if the grading companies would do like SCDA and give a report card with the card that explains why it got the grade it did.

i think i hear what you are saying. the stale old crap is seller hype, that's it. BUT keep in mind, grading is SUBJECTIVE....always has been, always will be. within each grade there is a range...no doubt. imo, that range gets smaller as the grades get higher.
when buying online....check the scan, make you own conclusions.

What's really funny is to see a seller that says "I was robbed" and he wasn't even the person to have the card slabbed...
