Thanks go out to David McDonald for being generous with his time in speaking with me before I bought this. Also, a big thank you to Pete Calderon at Heritage for working with me through a complicated bidding situation. I've had to sell some stuff I never planned on to make it happen, but I feel fortunate to have it.

The back of the card has scrapbook residue (glue and paper) but no paper loss. Has anyone had any experience removing glue from the surface without soaking the whole card? Anyone try goo-gone?

I don't think I would try goo-gone, it might bleed through the card and eat the signature. If the signature is ink, I would think dabbing some water on there would work best, and probably not affect the signature.

I'd be nervous!

Edited to add: I had a T206 Cobb with the name "Carl" written in fountain ink and I tried to get it off with a q-tip and water but nothing happened to the name.

HA! I sat there for a minute looking at the card and trying to figure out how it got a NM7 grade....until I realized it was signed by Gehrig.

Tremendous pickup Matt...I'd leave it just the way it is.

Me too....then about 25 seconds later I figured out the auto got the 7. I will agree with others...I would leave it alone. It's a great card. Congratulations!!!

A collection cornerstone piece, to be sure - Congrats!!!

Now, the solution to your problem is really rather simple - don't crack it, don't touch it!
The value is all derived from the signature. The card isn't worth the alteration attempt.

If you really want to see the back, just buy another unsigned one for a fraction of the cost! happy.gif

fantastic - thanks for posting it.

Did you buy the card for the autograph or because you wanted a Goudey Gehrig? I get the feeling that you wanted the autograph. We never plan on anything bad to happen but picture this... you crack the slab, you get your water and materials ready. Ooops, you accidentally drop the card in the water and mess up the signature or you drop the card on a corner and now you can have a card with a cleaned back and squished corner...

Worse yet, you crack the slab, clean it up and PSA says the card is now altered and wont encapsulate it again... Ok, maybe not that...

The signature is great, who cares about the back?

Matt: Way to go, brah! You put your head down and charged through the line. A great score! Definitely a card to put under your pillow when you sleep. GooGone would be murder. Don't even think it. Focus on what's awesome about the card. Gehrig held that cardboard in his hand and beautifully scripted his name below his classic portrait. Congratulations!

My suggestion:

If you want a nicer Gehrig card, you can always find one.

If you need another autographed Gehrig because this one got ruined, it's not like you can get him to sign another for you.

That's an unbelievable card, and trust me - nobody's looking at the back.

Awesome card Matt!

How many signed '34 Gehrigs are known to exist? Can't be many.

Thanks very much guys!

It seems there is a consensus on the removal. I bought the card for the combo of the classic Gehrig card and the beautiful signature. Part of the significance of the '34 Goudey Gehrig to me is his quote on the back about hoping to play for "many years to come" which is why I would even consider removing the scrapbook paper. I appreciate the input.

I've been back to this thread four or five times, just to look at the card again. The signature is perfect. It's in the perfect place, on my favorite Gehrig card - right under his smile, right above the facsimile signature on the card, at almost the same angle.

What a great card this is.

Al - thanks - I keep picking it up and staring at it as well. I'm thankful it was tucked away in the depths of the Heritage catalog - I've spoken with a few people that said they didn't even see it offered.

Very nice indeed! I too am in the leave it as it is camp.

The NM 7 grade is for the signature NOT the card for those that
are unsure.

Yea, the Lou-Gone is a scary proposition. But what I would consider, is to have the line "Auto Grade Only NM 7" removed and replaced with Authentic. You can't put a number on that great script IMO. I would trade away a good portion of my stuff (except my Bobby Orr), to have that card in it's present form Matt.

I certainly would not do anything that would risk the signature - I was just wondering if there is something out there that is safe on the surface. Perhaps a robotic arm and a razor blade...

From the description/photo I thought there was paper loss on the back, so I certainly am keeping the card regardless of whether or not the paper can be removed from the back. I was pleasantly surprised to have the card show up with no PL and hence the thread.

I would leave this beauty safely in its slab as well...

The gorgeous autograph is what makes this one so special. I am apparently one of many who missed it in the Heritage Catalogue!

Congrats on a "once in a lifetime" acquisition!
