Default LEAST favorite t206 HOFer pose

Okay, just to shake things up a bit, instead of the usual what's your favorite or most beautiful etc....What about a HOF card which, apart from any value it may have, just never turned you on?

I'll start out with a perhaps controversial pick....Tris Speaker.

Vic Willis Pitching. Just looks like an over-matched kid, not a Hall of Famer...

Johnny Evers, blue background.

On second thought, Cy Young glove showing.

I vote for Rube Marquard pitching.

The pose just looks unnatural to me for some reason.

At first I didn't like the muted colors of the Marquard but have grown to like them...that "tan" background is rather unusual...agree about the Cy...

Fred Clarke's face kind of ruins the "with bat" post.

What weakest portrait? Never a fan of the Marquard.

Oh good one on the Cy Young glove showing, terrible pose! Forgot about that one, always hated that pose. He looks like a blob on that card. I'm actually putting that #1 and Kelley #2.

I like Cy Young glove showing. I think there are too many bad poses to name. The monster is a fun set with some great cards but some of the portraits are pretty damn ugly.

Cy Young portray? Huh? Though agree on Huggins portrait--might be worst. Though I love his hand-to-mouth more than many others. The colors.

I'm with Leon, love the Young port. I think Chase, Young, Elberfeld and Titus are the best portraits in the set.

Sorry Alex, still can't get over the hideous Young "glove showing" pose, lol. It's one card that I honestly wouldn't even collect with a rare back. I'd probably take one just to complete the monster, but I certainly wouldn't pay a premium for any more, no matter what back it had........yes, to me, it IS that ugly

*By the way awesome card Leon

Cy Young Glove Showing (not my photo)

I'm not a T206 fan, but this is one of my favorite poses. He was around 43 yrs old at the time (1910), so he's likely heftier for that reason. I'm sure its been talked about, but why does it look like a Philly A's logo on his shirt?

As far as worst, IMO, I have to agree with the Speaker ... looks like very little effort went into the card design ... (not my photo)

Rob, I started a thread about that "A" on Cy's uniform last year.
Some members told me that it is an older Boston uniform. It actually says

B A

for Boston Americans. In this pose you can only see the A on Cy's shirt.
I thought that this was the best explanation.

I actually like the Young with Glove. I agree the Marquard with hands at side is terrible. I also don't like the Home Run Baker.

A little "heftier" at 43, ok sure, but not 400lbs. like the image makes him look, lol. I think the portrait pose captures Young's look at that time.

Side note, I also happen to like the Speaker pose. Similar to the one on his T3, I think it captures his classic swing.

Default There are quite a few

Tinker batting
Crawford w/ bat
Marquard hands at side
McGraw finger in air
Baker
Speaker
Young throwing
Bender w/o trees, Jennings one hand (because they are basically duplicates of another card in the set)

I actually like the Kelley and Young w glove quite a bit

Jennings/both hands, familiar pose appearing in many sets, but looks like a cheerleader wannabe.

Also, Matty portrait. Doesn't do justice to his peaceful persona.

I assume you mean "Bat off shoulder." I would agree with that. "Bat on shoulder" is a beautiful card

I guess I'll be the first to say that I like all of them.

There are a couple of commons I don't like that much (but not many).

If we're just talking portraits, put me down for the Mathewson. I love the white and dark cap cards, but the portrait doesn't do anything for me.

Put me down as one who really likes the Tris Speaker, Cy Young port, and the Jennings both hands. The Jennings is one of my favorites in the entire set. That's pure joy, to me.

We started at worst now we are at best. In my opinion the Johnson, Matty and Cy Young Portraits are just cool, also the Jennings portrait. I am just partial to the portraits.

Not a bad portrait, but I think they could have done Matty better here. I still say my favorite "portrait" card of all time in general is Matty's E107.

I understand that some believe there's no better and no worse it's "just a matter of taste" (though this clearly doesn't apply in most other areas of art) but I think that one has to recognize that it appears better artists, or more care or more time, was taken with certain players and not others. That's why, in general, most of the Hall of Fame portraits are clearly finer art than most of the commons (although exceptions abound), and also true for most of the HOF poses. You can see it in details and facial features, which can get pretty ragged in a lot of commons but not many HOFers. That's why some of us are down on, say, the Speaker, which may be an unusual batting shot but poorly executed.

The artist who executed, say, the Johnny Evers portrait was probably not the same one who did, say, Miller Huggins. And so on. Someone made Marquard too tubby in that hands-at-side shot, but as usual with the HOF art a lot of care was taken with the background color. And so on.

Default (GASP!)The Young Port?! is on this list?

I just sold mine -- via the recent B-L -- after having it for 45 years. I am so grateful that it went to a fellow board member. Cripes, what's next on the craplist? The Johnson portrait? OY!

Wow, surprised to hear some critiques of the Matty portrait. I always liked the orange to yellow fade on that background, and his portrait captivates the viewer similar to the Johnson.

I guess I never cared much for the Cy Young bare hand. The limp wrist just looks too feminine on this card. The same pose doesn't seem as off-putting when I see it on the T3 Turkey Red card, though.

Disagree that Bresnahan and Jennings are weak--very unusual backing colors for Jennings and Bresnahan has greats colors and very well-executed portrait.

Agreed with many, Marquard hands at side just looks terrible.
I don't see why everyone's hatin' on the Jennings portrait, I like the background colors (and you can't fault him for looking exactly like Vladimir Putin).

Best in my opinion is the Ed Walsh portrait, love that green.

Best portrait is the Walter Johnson IMO.

Best HOF card is the Cobb/ bat-off shoulder, followed closely by the Matty /dark cap.

I know that these are very conventional opinions. Sorry, but I just don't have anything controversial in my preferences.

I agree with your opinion on Johnson and Cobb.
